About the opportunity
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Enterprise) is a pivotal leadership role reporting directly to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) (DVCR).
The role supports the University of Sydney's strategic objectives to enhance research impact and translation through strategic partnerships and various innovation and commercialisation activities.
This senior position oversees the commercialisation support teams, the management of intellectual property, and supports spin-out companies.
The role shapes policies, initiatives, and partnerships, enabling researchers to effectively translate their work into real-world applications.
The role involves providing strategic advice to the DVCR on priorities related to innovation, commercialisation, new venture formation, and strategic partnerships while implementing strategies to develop and strengthen an integrated approach to innovation, engagement, and enterprise across the University.
By working collaboratively across University portfolios, faculties, and multidisciplinary institutes (MDIs), the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) ensures that enterprise-focused initiatives align with institutional goals and foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurial ethos in our students, staff, and alumni.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) oversees the Commercialisation Office, the New Ventures Investment Team and the Sydney Knowledge Hub, ensuring its operations maximise benefits for the University and its partners.
Additionally, the role includes engaging with government and industry to identify opportunities for precinct planning and research-based land development, while representing the University at major industry, national, and international forums.
This role entails leading the establishment of systems to monitor and evaluate research commercialisation performance, using internal and external benchmarks to assess the success of investments.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) promotes best practices and fosters a client-focused culture within the portfolio, while also spearheading initiatives in commercialisation to deliver growth in research income and to enhance the funding base of the University through new models and schemes for research investment and to retain top-tier academic talent.
In addition to building relationships with venture capital groups, incubators, accelerators, and co-working spaces, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) represents the University in industry-focused government networks and external policy groups.
They also serve as a delegate for the DVCR when necessary.
Furthermore, the position requires leadership on institution-wide projects and the delivery of strategic initiatives as directed by the DVCR.
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
Strategic leadership in developing and implementing large-scale research partnerships.
Proven ability to drive collaboration across faculties, industry, and government.
Expertise in financial planning and change management within complex organisations.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated capacity to influence and lead academic and professional teams.
Extensive experience in research translation, commercialisation, and the venture life cycle.
Strong track record of establishing impactful external partnerships.
Recognised achievements in research and/or education leadership.
Expertise in quality improvement processes and innovative research strategy.

Term and remuneration
The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
