Sydney Cytometry is an Advanced Cytometry facility established through a collaboration of the Centenary Institute and the University of Sydney. It is a core research facility for cytometry, cell sorting and imaging that serves the University of Sydney campus and beyond. Sydney Cytometry is committed to the continuing development and transfer of cytometry expertise and techniques, thereby enhancing the role of cytometry as a major modality in biological/biomedical research.
The Academic Director, Sydney Cytometry provides academic leadership, guiding a world-class, internationally recognised facility for research and research training. This is a University-wide academic leadership role that is a conduit into University leadership, decision making, and strategy. Concomitantly, it is an academic appointment and we expect that the successful applicant will have a demonstrated capacity to balance academic leadership and personal scholarship. This role represents the University in the joint management of the Sydney Cytometry Core Facility and has responsibility for ensuring that the terms of the agreement between the Centenary Institute and the University are met.
About you (skills, capabilities and experience) The successful candidate will:
Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline. Have recognised international academic standing within a related field (including reference to Honours and HDR student completions, publication record, category I-IV funding track record). Have experience in the development of advanced cytometry, cell/tissue sorting & analysis, and imaging methodologies. Have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters. Have proven leadership and management experience at a senior level with evidence of an ability to provide. Have overall strategic alignment within and between institutions/organisations. Have competence and experience in risk management, including the management of workplace health and safety. Have the ability to clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals and groups in a manner that engages the audience and fosters understanding. Sponsorship / work rights for Australia Visa Sponsorship and relocation assistance will be provided if required.
Term and remuneration The position of the Academic Director, Sydney Cytometry is a senior academic leadership role. As such, this appointment will be offered initially as a five-year fixed-term appointment, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The position is available on a fractional basis for 0.8 FTE. Further appointments are possible, subject to performance and other factors. For external candidates, an underlying appointment within the appropriate university school or faculty will be offered, subject to negotiation.
Underpinning this senior leadership appointment is a continuing academic role in the School of Medical Sciences (SOMS), in the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Which is subject to negotiation for external candidates. The role is apportioned as 80% to the Sydney Cytometry directorship, and 20% to SOMS. The appointee will revert 100% to this substantive academic role in SOMS in the case where the Directorship appointment is for one term only. As a full member of the academic staff of SOMS, with all the rights and privileges that come with this, it is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to the teaching and research of their home school throughout their appointment in proportion to the appointment level.
