The Melbourne team currently operates a unique range of Test and Evaluation (T&E) capabilities including our in-house Medium Weight Shock Testing Machine (JASSO) and operation of Defence's heavy weight shock barge for Maritime systems qualification.
We are looking to expand our T&E services and work closely with our Perth-based team as well as some of Thornton Tomasetti's offices in the UK and US.The RoleWe have an opportunity for a Trials Technician to join our Applied Science team, based in Melbourne, Victoria.
The role will be to primarily support our Defence portfolio's T&E work in shock testing of naval equipment, with the opportunity to help drive our expansion into new T&E capabilities.
Part of this role will be to support the operational use of our in-house test facilities in relation to both preparing for and conducting shock testing activities.
The role would be ideal for someone with existing T&E experience or strong trade skills who is looking to deploy these skills in a new setting.
We are looking for technicians with a background in any of the following areas:FabricationMechanical systemsElectrical systems or instrumentationResponsibilitiesManagement and maintenance of specialist test apparatus and instrumentation systems.Support to management of workshop/warehouse facility.Fabrication of fixtures for use during testing programs.Development and updating of safe operating procedures and risk assessments for activities conducted in the workshop and during offsite testing activities.Set-up, monitoring and triggering instrumentation during testing activities.
This role involves a mixture of field test work and laboratory/bench work.
Trials may be undertaken at a range of locations, which will involve a requirement to travel for work on occasion.RequirementsWe are looking for a candidate with a minimum of a TAFE Cert III/IV in a relevant discipline (e.g., mechanical or instrumentation) or qualified as a Marine Technician (or similar) in the Australian Defence Force.Experience in fabrication (machining and welding of metal) is highly desirable.Experience in a test and evaluation role is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.Experience in the use of data acquisition systems is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.Basic drafting experience is desirable but not essential.A willingness to enhance their skills through on-the-job learning.The ability to travel to support off-site test and evaluation activities.Applicants must be an Australian Citizen and be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.Thornton Tomasetti is proud to be an equal employment workplace.
