Aboriginal applicants will be granted priority consideration for this vacancy.Primary Objective:Transport Inspectors are responsible for ensuring that vehicles using the Northern Territory Road network are operating in a safe, roadworthy condition, within mass limits and are complying with relevant legislation.Context Statement:The Vehicle Compliance Unit is responsible for vehicle inspection, enforcement, audit, and compliance activities consistent with NT legislation relating to mass, dimension, and load restraint, as well as vehicle safety. The Unit also provides advice and education related to these functions to the road freight and passenger transport industry, the motor trades industry, the community, and other government agencies including Police and interstate agencies.Key Duties and Responsibilities:Maintain and deliver high levels of customer service to the public, competent authorities and agencies, and the road transport industry whilst adhering to technical and administrative standards.Conduct inspections at Vehicle Inspection Facilities and in the field on all vehicle types to ensure they are in a safe roadworthy condition and complying with legislative requirements.Participate in compliance and enforcement activities both on road and at weighbridges to ensure safe vehicle operations and asset protection.Assess oversize/over mass permit applications for compliance with technical standards and guidelines, and issue permits of exemption with appropriate conditions of operation, consistent with the legislative framework.Prepare documentation and reports consistent with tasks performed and give evidence in court if required.Consider and act in a manner that maintains compliance with Work Health and Safety legislation.Selection Criteria:Essential:A relevant mechanical trade or tertiary qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent; or relevant experience in a field of technical work closely related to the duties of the vacancy.Demonstrated ability to remain calm in high-pressure environments, deal with difficult people, manage complaints and disputes in various settings and contexts, and act constructively and work through challenges in an enforcement environment.Demonstrated administrative experience, with the ability to process data and information in various computer applications, undertake research, compile concise reports, and interpret legislation as required.Ability to work proactively as part of a team whilst managing own workload, display problem-solving skills, and make timely decisions to achieve appropriate work outcomes.Demonstrated recent broad experience in mechanical and technical fields of motor vehicle standards and safety.Physically fit with the ability to perform all inspection and enforcement duties associated with the Vehicle Inspection Facilities and mobile teams requiring indoor and outdoor activities.Able to work on a rotational basis where there is a requirement to work outside of normal hours. Both shift and overtime will be required, as will travel to remote locations with overnight stays.A current NT Driver's licence or the ability to obtain.Desirable:Knowledge and broad understanding of relevant Northern Territory Road transport legislation and knowledge of the heavy haulage industry.Further Information:A Police Criminal History Check prior to appointment is required.
