Reporting to the Group Head of Communications and as a member of the Development & Technology SLT, and the global Communications LT, this role is responsible for leading an outstanding business partnering team supporting our Chief Technical Officer and Development and Technology senior leaders.

Based in Brisbane or Perth, this individual will lead a team of business partners, supporting each area of Development & Technology – on communications needs – both internal and external, with the aim of driving Rio Tinto's culture journey within D&T, and supporting its strategic aims through world-class communications advice and delivery.

This leader will have deep curiosity about Rio Tinto's business and culture evolution, including a drive to quickly understand the diverse and technical aspects of D&T and have a continuous learning and improvement mindset.
They will act as the communications subject matter expert for key strategic areas – including our Excel in Development, decarbonisation and SPS agendas, ensuring these are fully integrated into Rio Tinto's broader strategic communications plan.

This person will also be an active and visible catalyst for the culture we want to build at Rio Tinto and known as a role model of our values.

Key Accountabilities
Lead our D&T communications practice serving the needs of this diverse area flexibly and allocating resources for maximum impact.
Provide strategic advice and recommendations to executive and senior management, across multiple complex global portfolios including Exploration, Projects, Innovation, Group Technical and Energy & Climate.
Responsible for designing, implementing and measuring strategies to support employee engagement within Development & Technology, effective partnering with other parts of Rio Tinto and issues and crisis management, including BRT scenarios.
Acts as the strategic communications support and conduit for growth and divestment activities including new discoveries and mergers and acquisitions.
Guide selection of and oversee short term change management communications resources where necessary, to enable effective delivery of major projects.
Use creative and effective communications (both internally and externally) to keep audiences informed about D&T's strategic objectives and business developments, building connection and loyalty with employees.
Partner closely with relevant senior leaders, including the D&T people function, and CSP colleagues to ensure communications strategies support business goals.
Support the CTO and other D&T leaders to become even better and more effective individual communicators, including through a clear external speech/event program, that is a brilliant experience for them and has strong impact for Rio.
Embed robust analytics, listening and measurement processes into communications strategies, analyzing and sharing relevant metrics to demonstrate communications plans effectiveness and continuously improve.
Act as an active advocate for an evolved culture in Communications (focused, expert, fun and dynamic), as we build an industry leading function.
What you'll bring to be successful in the role
Over 15 years' experience in managing aspects of strategic communications and stakeholder engagement in large companies, agencies, or government departments.
Strong emotional intelligence, with the ability to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Collaborative, curious, proactive, respectful and inclusive leadership style.
Problem-solving mindset with the ability to facilitate solutions at pace.
Creative and innovative approach to delivering communications outcomes.
Self-motivated with ability to manage competing priorities with ease.
Strong influencing and negotiation skills, with a commercial approach to allocating resources.
Proven ability to provide strategic communications advice to senior management across to maximize impact.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to tailor messaging for different audiences.
Experience in coaching senior leaders on their own communication style and impact.
Demonstrated ability to lead in a matrix organization.
