The role of the National Library is defined by the National Library Act 1960 and can be broadly defined as "to ensure that documentary resources of national significance relating to Australia and the Australian people, as well as significant non-Australian library materials, are collected, preserved and made accessible".
Accessibility can be either through the Library itself or through collaborative arrangements with other libraries and information providers.
The National Library is the custodian of a rich collection reflecting the people and culture that shape Australia and Australians.
We collect a wide range of physical and digital materials and includes more than 10 million items ranging from books and journals to more than 40,000 paintings, drawings and prints, more than 9,000 metres of manuscripts, 550,000 photographs, hundreds of thousands of maps, more than 50,000 oral history recordings and millions of archived websites.

Our employment register is for non-ongoing (temporary) jobs that are short-term or project-based for up to 12 months.
Jobs can be full time, part time or casual (intermittent and varied hours).
The work offered can be within: Collections Management - preservation, cataloguing, acquisitions, special collections management, curatorship, archivists Library Services - reference services, reading room floor, document supply services, collection retrieval, research Digital and IT Services - IT support and operations, Trove, digitisation, digital preservation, web development, graphic design Corporate services and administration - finance, human resources, executive support, building management, records management Exhibitions and outreach - education, marketing, editorial/publishing, exhibition installation.
The roles available may be at APS2-APS 6 classifications and Executive Level 1 and 2.
