In this position, you will be a member of a small team that plans and conducts research and monitoring of aquatic threatened species throughout Queensland. A critical requirement of the role is the willingness and ability to work in remote field conditions for periods of up to two weeks.
We are looking for someone who has: Demonstrated competency in research and analysis. You will understand the principles of conservation biology and threatened species management, and contribute to project design, project management, and achievement of agreed outcomes. You will show attention to detail and the ability to collect and accurately manage data. It will be beneficial if you have experience in database management and data analysis. You will have high level verbal and written skills to contribute to communication of project outcomes. Proven ability to provide high quality technical support to research scientists , with a minimum of 2 years' experience with capture, handling, and measuring aquatic species. Our field work can involve living on boats or camping in remote locations, including islands, for up to two weeks at a time. You will assist with planning those trips, preparing documentation, maintaining equipment and vessels, and training of volunteers. You will be required to work effectively in such environments and to consider the physical and psychological welfare of yourself and colleagues. You will have a strong commitment to health and safety, and to animal ethics, with a commitment to comply with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. You will be experienced in small vessel operations and hold a Coxswain Certificate or be able to obtain one within six months of commencing the role. Demonstrated ability to build relationships, communicate and negotiate with a range of clients and stakeholders. We partner with stakeholders such as traditional owners, research institutions, Marine Parks staff, and volunteers from the community. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate an ability to communicate and to establish productive working relationships with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to manage priorities and achieve outcomes within specified timeframes. We are looking for someone who can manage their time to achieve team goals and meet deadlines. This will require you to follow established procedures and adhere to departmental policies, and to contribute to improving procedures where required. You will have an ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a small team ; ability to supervise volunteers and prioritise their activities in line with department objectives. Our work is team-based and requires a supportive approach that focuses on the wellbeing of all team members, including volunteers. You will actively contribute to the team, share ideas and feedback, show initiative, and take responsibility for your work.
