About the team The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is a large division within the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR).
The NMI supports DISR in meeting its objectives by being the national authority on measurement.
We play a fundamental role underpinning the Australian economy by maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system, developing and maintaining national measurement standards, and delivering world-class measurement products and client services.
NMI's Legal Metrology Branch (LMB) plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services.
To ensure traders comply with the law and adopt correct measurement trading practices, we employ Trade Measurement Inspectors who check that measuring instruments (for example, weighing instruments, fuel dispensers and weighbridges) are accurate, and pre-packaged articles contain the correct amount of produce.
The Programs and Governance Section within the LMB has oversight and is accountable for the delivery of a diverse range of business operational requirements, while providing corporate support to the General Manager, LMB.
It is comprised of four functionally aligned units, including Program Coordination and Monitoring, Program Coordination and Engagement, a Digital Business Team, and a Governance Team.
The Technical Editor and Writer will be aligned with the Governance Team.
The opportunity Reporting to the Manager, Programs and Governance, the role of Technical Editor and Writer will provide high quality, timely and accurate technical editorial services to the LMB to ensure a range of written documents are fit for purpose and the messages reach their intended audiences.
You will work collaboratively across all sections of the LMB and also work closely with the NMI and DISR communications teams.
The role will focus the delivery of key LMB publications including branch priorities, compliance reporting, web updates, Measurement Law Reform artefacts, national test procedures and type approval documents and other documents identified by the Section Manager.

Our ideal candidate The capabilities listed below describe the specific skills, knowledge and behaviours required to successfully perform this job role: Demonstrated experience with writing, editing and quality assurance of technical documents, preferably in a government or regulatory setting.
Advanced skills in the Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written and oral communication skills to support effective engagement and professional relationships with key stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, managing timeframes to achieve outcomes.
Personal drive and integrity in the context of the APS values, NMI values (Inclusive, Innovative, Accountable, Adaptable, Influential and Strategic) and code of conduct.
Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership in supporting others to do the same.
What you will do The Technical Editor and Writer operates under broad direction and will be responsible for the following: Provide expertise to ensure a broad range of documents are suited to the audience whilst meeting relevant statutory and technical requirements, including the Australian Government Style Guide.
Proofread, revise, edit and fact-check technical content.
Working collaboratively with LMB Sections, NMI teams and the NMI Executive to ensure a consistent approach to how published documents are finalised, including developing a procedure to support this.
Fosters an environment of continuous improvement by keeping abreast of industry and government best practice and proactively engaging with stakeholders to deliver outcomes.
Share knowledge within LMB and the NMI to uplift internal writing capabilities.
Demonstrate behaviour according to APS code of conduct and NMI's standards and participate fully in all aspects of WH&S Eligibility This is a list of mandatory professional qualifications, certifications or licenses required under legislation or policy to undertake the role.
Mandatory qualifications may be required prior to entering the role or need to be acquired within a certain period from commencing in the role (the timeframe will be specified).
Australian Citizenship.
Baseline Security Clearance (employer arranged prior to commencement).
Notes Desirable professional qualifications, experience, certifications or licenses include the following: A relevant degree or higher qualification.
Formal IPed editing accreditation.
Remote work is a possibility and will be discussed with the Manager on a case-by-case basis.
The NMI has many locations in most Australian capital cities.
Travel to Australian capital cities may be required but is not common.
The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles.
This vacancy is based in various locations, although flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered.
