The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department is an accredited laboratory that provides a professional forensic service to Victoria Police, persons involved with the administration of justice, and the public.
About the unit: The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department provides a professional forensic service to Victoria Police and the community.
FEMU Function: The unit is responsible for receiving, documenting, recording on computer, packaging, labelling, storing, and distributing items for forensic examination by VPFSC staff.
The unit liaises between operational police, other clients, and forensic staff to facilitate the examination of items and to distribute reports.
About the role: To provide leadership and clearly define expectations, allocate work, monitor and manage performance including the provision of timely and constructive feedback to facilitate staff development.
As the successful applicant, some of your duties will include: Manage and co-ordinate the provision of evidence tracking functions throughout the Department in accordance with evidentiary, legal, and audit requirements.Contribute to the development and implementation of and manage a system of controlled issue of Centre reports under Centre seal, electronically monitoring casework management for all Units within the Centre, to meet proposed legislative requirements.Determine which articles should be received for evidentiary examination, in consultation with appropriate forensic specialists.Process and preserve biological, chemical, drug, and other crime samples as part of evidence storage.Supervise and train staff in the provision of and adherence to strict procedures for the electronic recording of casework management, exhibit tracking, cataloguing, and auditing procedures.Oversee and undertake administrative tasks including management of the Pending casework system, preparation of audit reports, compilation of management statistics, correspondence, etc.Investigate and make recommendations for improving evidence tracking procedures, including casework audit and centralised case file storage.Present supportive evidence of fact in Courts of Law regarding exhibit tracking, as required.Skills & Experience: As the successful applicant, you will have: Demonstrated ability to supervise a team, including undertaking routine staff administration, correctly allocating team priorities and ensuring deadlines are met.Demonstrated correspondence management skills and proven capacity to co-ordinate tasks, determine priorities, monitor workflows and operate effectively as a member in a team environment.Well-developed research, conceptual, and analytical skills with demonstrated planning and organising ability.Proven ability to work flexibly, with limited supervision and/or lead a team and contribute to team or organisation goals.Sound computer skills, particularly in word-processing and other software packages.Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, dealing effectively with a wide range of personnel within a large and diverse organisation focusing on continual improvement.An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.Requirements and relevant information: Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive, Macleod, Victoria.Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa.The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).The incumbent will be required to complete the OHS requirements of the organisation, which may include local level training relating to equipment usage and Hazardous Chemicals.Possess a current Victorian Driver Licence and hold, or qualify within three (3) months, a White Class Driver Authority.At any point in time, the Department Head may arrange the FEMG staff to undergo drug and alcohol testing via Victoria Police Drug and Alcohol Testing Unit (DATU).For your application to be considered, your application must include: Resume, andResponses to the Selection Criteria – The Selection Criteria is found in the position description attached to the job advertisement.
