Mount Erin College provides individualised support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students in mainstream classes across all year levels. Staff in our Deaf Education Centre work closely with classroom teachers to provide an inclusive program for students across all year levels. We are the only government secondary school in the South Eastern region that provides support for these students by highly trained staff.
Selection CriteriaSC1: Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills. Demonstrated experience in responding to student learning needs.
SC2: Demonstrated experience in planning for and implementing high impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.
SC3: Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning. Demonstrated experience in using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.
SC4: Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.
SC5: Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values. Demonstrated experience in reflecting upon practice and engaging in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.
RoleTeachers of the Deaf (TODs) in Australia hold a Masters degree specialising in education for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH). They provide support to Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, their parents and family, and to other professionals who are involved with the student's education.
A TOD is responsible for preparing lesson plans and educating students at all levels. Their duties include assigning homework, grading tests, and documenting progress. Teachers must be able to instruct in a variety of subjects and reach students with engaging lesson plans.
ResponsibilitiesSpecific Responsibilities: Interpreting audiological information and specialist assessments and using this information to guide the practices to best support the DHH student.Providing equitable access to communication, learning and socialisation opportunities for DHH students in a range of educational settings.Conducting direct teaching to DHH students using 1:1, small group and team-teaching models.Demonstrating a repertoire of flexible and effective teaching strategies to improve the educational outcomes for DHH students.Having a high level of understanding of literacy development and the ability to use a range of strategies to develop students' literacy skills.Supporting DHH students to develop their identity as DHH students within the world.Supporting DHH students to effectively access all aspects of the school curriculum.Demonstrating a high level of knowledge and expertise in other areas of disability.Employing a range of strategies to support DHH students with complex needs.Working collaboratively with the families of DHH students.Engaging in relevant ongoing professional learning.Who May ApplyTeachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
