Teacher - Advisory Visiting Teacher - Deaf/Hard of Hearing - Far North Queensland The Department of Education (DoE) is committed to delivering responsive services focused on equity and excellence to Queenslanders and their communities. As a teacher of the deaf/AVT Auslan based in the FNQ region, you will:
Collaborate with school teams to enhance staff capability in planning, differentiating, delivering and assessing high-quality effective teaching programs for bilingual Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students who use Auslan as their primary language (L1), from diagnosis to school completion. Develop, directly deliver and measure sign bilingual effective teaching and intervention programs that support the diverse language, literacy and numeracy learning needs of DHH students that use Auslan as their L1. Guide and support teachers and Auslan teacher aides to create inclusive environments that facilitate access, participation and achievement for DHH students that use Auslan as their L1, ensuring they engage with the curriculum on the same basis as their peers. Facilitate complex case management meetings with school teams, ensuring a collaborative approach to address the unique learning and access needs of DHH students that use Auslan as their L1. Engage in ongoing professional supervision, professional development, and specialised training to enhance expertise and stay current with best practices in Deaf education and sign bilingual instruction. The teacher of the Deaf/AVT Auslan reports to the FNR Principal Advisor Auslan (PAA) in partnership with statewide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS). The TOD/Advisory Visiting teacher receives professional supervision, direction and support from the PAA in collaboration with DHHS. Ideally you will demonstrate:
Professional working proficiency in Auslan. Knowledge and application of sign bilingual pedagogical practices to meet the diverse learning needs of DHH Auslan L1 students. Strong communicator and great time manager. Previous experience relevant to the role including a good understanding of the Australian Curriculum, P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (CARF) and Individual Curriculum Planning. Teacher of the deaf qualifications or a preparedness to undertake further study to obtain qualifications. Preparedness to travel to schools in the region. Mandatory Requirements: A relevant teaching qualification. Current full or provisional registration with QCT. In addition to registration, teachers working in Education and Care Services (including State delivered Kindergarten programs) require an exemption card issued by Blue Card Services.
