A Correctional Officer contributes to the safe, humane and secure containment of prisoners/remandees and their rehabilitation.
Post training, salary range for Shift Work is $86,013 - $94,751 pa + super. Annual salary increase within this range in accordance with the Correctional Officers Agreement 2023 . During training (12 weeks), salary is $62,702 pa + super.
In addition to salary + super, Correctional Officers attract:
8 weeks leave per year, normally taken as two 4-week leave blocks. Access to purchased leave, leave without pay, State Service accumulated leave scheme. Access to salary sacrifice and salary packaging. Opportunity to obtain a nationally recognised qualification. Regular paid training days, career progression opportunities across Tasmania.
Uniform provided via points system.
Experienced Correctional Officers may be eligible for recognition of service including above base salary on commencement and reduced training requirements.
Correctional Officers work 76.0 hours per fortnight, on a fully rotational roster. This includes day and night shifts, public holidays and weekends. During training, start and finish times will vary in accordance with training requirements; however, can expect to be day shifts Monday to Friday.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate resilience, maturity and flexibility along with high levels of literacy, numeracy and excellent computer skills and digital literacy. They will also be assessed against the Values of the Department of Justice where all employees are to act with integrity, respect and accountability within workplaces which are inclusive and collaborative.
Prior training, experience and qualifications in corrections are not required. However, applicants should be able to demonstrate attributes in the following areas: team orientation, very high-level interpersonal skills, integrity, strength and stamina, resilience, respect, supportive, accountable, tolerant, assertive, adaptable, decisive, dependable, courage, motivated, patient, objective, able to read people and situations and to think critically and problem solve.
Successful applicants will complete a 12-week training program with the Tasmania Prison Service at the Risdon site to help develop these skills and abilities and enable them to become professional and effective Correctional Officers. The training provides successful trainees with the opportunity to acquire a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) which is a nationally recognised qualification. Intrastate, interstate and overseas applicants may be eligible for relocation support.
During the recruitment process, applicants will be assessed for their suitability to perform the duties of a Correctional Officer which also includes psychological and workforce health/fitness assessments as well as criminal history background checks.
