This program isthe ideal opportunity for you to experience firsthand what it islike to work as a lawyer in our firm. We have nine practice areasacross Australia. As a seasonal clerk you will rotate through twopractice areas and be involved in real legal work right from thestart, giving you in-depth experience and providing real insightinto life as a lawyer at K&L Gates.
Inconjunction with on-the-job experience, we provide formal training.On day one, you will receive a comprehensive induction to the firmfollowed by on-going training sessions over the course of yourclerkship program. These sessions have been designed to developyour legal knowledge and business skills, as well as to give you abroader insight into the various areas of law in which wepractise.
We truly believethat working together is better. Your supervisor and buddy willhelp you settle in, and you will work closely with the partners,special counsel, senior associates and lawyers in your team. Youwill be provided with opportunities to build strong relationships,both within your team and the wider firm network. We provide andencourage a collaborative environment in which you can develop andthrive.
Not only willyou get to experience what it is like to work in a global corporatelaw firm, you will have the chance to enjoy our down to earthculture we are known for. Clerks are encouraged to attend learningand development sessions, firm celebrations and other activitiessuch as staff drinks and our regular pro-bono, community andcharitable activities, and an innovation Hackathon Day. In Australia,K&L Gates has approximately 300 fee earners located across fouroffices: Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

As partof your application, you will be asked to upload your academictranscript, a cover letter, and for you to provide answers to setquestions before providing us with details about your workexperience, education and extra-curricular activities.
Successfulapplicants for interview will be notified by email. You willexperience a two-stage interview process. Your first interview willbe with one of our senior lawyers that are part of our recruitmentteam, as well as a member of our Human Resources team. The secondinterview is a group activity. Offers for a clerkshiprole will be made in accordance with the 2024 NSW Law Societyguidelines.
We considerinternational students on a case-by-case basis. If you are not anAustralian citizen or do not have permanent residency, you will beasked to outline your visa status and Australian working rights inthe application.
To be eligibleto apply for a K&L Gates clerkship program, you will be a lawstudent, in your penultimate or final year of study at university.You must hold full Australian working rights and be available foran in-person clerkship program and must also be able to commence anin-person graduate position in March 2026.
