Selwyn District Council has a unique opportunity for a Surface Water Operations Engineer to join our Infrastructure and Property team.
Our Water Services Team looks after the district's water supply, wastewater, and stormwater services including urban stormwater, rural land drainage, and stock water races.
This role will see you play an important part within our surface water portfolio, including day-to-day Stormwater, Land Drainage, and Water Race activities.

This role will also be responsible for:
Support Surface Water operations and the management of assets, including stormwater treatment facilities, pump stations, reticulation networks, and stock water races and other open channel schemes to meet all operational and consenting needs.Oversee Council's operational surface water activities including response to flooding and emergency events.Provide technical guidance on surface water activities including the treatment and provision of safe compliant stormwater discharges and flooding hazard across the district.Implement the development Operational Management Plans (OMPs) and undertake conditional assessments and inspections.Manage stock water race schemes efficiently including management of the irrigation takes.About you: The ideal person for the role will have experience in working with Surface Water assets and a practical understanding of the full life cycle costs of maintaining these assets, skilled with Stormwater Management Plans, resource consent monitoring, and improvement requirements.
You will need excellent customer/client management skills including facilitating between parties with different objectives noting our district covers both urban and rural ratepayers.
You will also have: A Bachelor of Engineering or Environmental Science, technical engineering qualification, or agricultural water supply related qualification or equivalent experience.At least 5+ years' experience with the relevant infrastructure area (water races, stormwater, drainage) and industry practices.Demonstrable experience working with Surface Water assets such as waterways, culverts, land drainage networks, stock water reticulation, storm water wetlands etc.Understanding of various legislation including the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act, and Water Services Bill.Excellent customer management skills including facilitating between parties with different objectives and diffusing conflict.Ability to review engineering plans and designs against consent, code of practice, and good practice requirements.What we can offer: Great work-life balance with flexibilityCareer coaching and developmentLife insuranceWellbeing and volunteer leaveThree days paid leave between Christmas and New YearTwo weeks paid Partners LeaveSick leave from day oneDiscounts with local and national businessesAbout us: Selwyn is one of the fastest-growing districts in New Zealand.
