Support Workers | Amelie House and Bethlehem House The St Vincent de Paul Society aspires to be recognised as a caring charity offering "a hand up" to people in need. We do this by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.
The Society seeks to fill Support Worker roles at Amelie House and Bethlehem House.
Amelie House, opening in the coming weeks, is an accommodation service for up to 40 women experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Hobart. These roles are offered on a two-year fixed-term contract.
Bethlehem House has been operational for over 50 years, offering accommodation for up to 70 men experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Hobart. These roles are offered on an ongoing permanent contract.
The Support Worker will assist in providing a safe and supportive service, encouraging and assisting residents on a path towards independence and longer-term housing.
A key part of this role is the hands-on support of residents from referral through to intake, when residing with us, and then when preparing for their next accommodation. Support includes offering residents appropriate assistance with building a new routine for daily living, emotional support, mentoring to achieve independence, and encouraging overall wellbeing in getting life back on track.
Providing guidance and information about appropriate external services and following up to support residents when navigating through the referral process also forms part of the Support Worker's duties. This role is pivotal to delivering positive outcomes for our residents during their stay.
With multiple roles available, Support Workers will operate on a 24/7, 4 on/4 off roster with varying shift times. Availability for all shift times and days is preferred and this will be discussed with candidates that work through the various stages of recruitment beyond an initial application.
Relatable experience in community service, mental health support, drug and alcohol program support, and/or a social services settings is essential. Understanding of the current housing crisis, the experience of homelessness, and the barriers faced in overcoming associated challenges. Experience in providing hands-on services and/or support through a collaborative style that is focused on delivering positive, person-centred outcomes. Ability to work as part of a cohesive team, taking a supportive approach to engaging with colleagues and residents that embraces trauma-informed care and support. Experience in creating meaningful stakeholder relationships within the community services industry and across broader networks throughout the community. Exceptional time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities. Ability to communicate with a wide range of cohorts, displaying empathy and fairness in all interactions. Strong commitment to confidentiality and an understanding of privacy principles. Sound administrative capacity and the ability to adapt to and learn new platforms quickly. Commitment to work together with the greater SVDP team in achieving against strategic and operational plans. Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in work priorities, styles, and environment, recognising the need to be responsive in a context that can change rapidly. The successful applicant must hold a current compliant National Police Check, along with a valid Working with Vulnerable People Card or the ability to obtain. You must also hold a Driver's Licence with no restrictions.
