Your Opportunity The Darwin Sobering Up Shelter provides overnight accommodation for homeless and displaced people aged 18 and over who are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs and are at risk of harm.
Clients are brought in by NT Police and Larrakia Night Patrol from across Darwin and Palmerston.
The shelter's staff assist clients with referrals to health and wellbeing services, supporting them through culturally sensitive and respectful engagement.
Support Workers at the shelter provide day, afternoon, and overnight care to individuals significantly affected by alcohol, ensuring a safe environment until the effects have subsided.
The role involves monitoring clients and connecting them to services that can help improve their overall situation.
Our shelter offers 40 beds, creating a space where vulnerable individuals can recover in safety.
This is a 24 hour service, therefore applicants must be available to work days, evenings, overnights and also weekend shifts when required.
Your Key Responsibilities Action intake assessments for clients to the service.
Provide tea or soup to clients on arrival, and provide a simple breakfast in the morning Monitor clients throughout their stay for safety.
Collaborate with the team in the care and management for people at risk and who exhibit challenging behaviour.
Act as an advocate for clients.
Take all relevant steps to ensure client outcomes are achieved.
Document activities or occurrences in reports and/or letters.
Maintain standards of conduct for the service to contribute to the program success.
General cleaning and maintenance of the common areas.
Requirements for Success With a substantial background in AOD and/or Community Services sectors, you will be confident in your assessment processes and supporting vulnerable people.
Other requirements include: Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, other relevant community services qualification or the ability to obtain the necessary qualification within 12 months.
Previous experience in a similar position.
Senior First Aid Certificate with CPR or willingness to obtain.
You must be available for 8-hour shifts covering a 7-day roster (combination of night and day shifts) covering weekends and public holidays.
Experience working with Aboriginal communities with an understanding and respect for the culture and protocols.
Computer literate in Microsoft programs.
The ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team to provide positive outcomes.
Demonstrated professional approach to maintaining professional boundaries.
Current driver licence with no restrictions Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
