The role
The successful candidate will lead and manage the pathology services within the Microbiology department at Gold Coast University Hospital Laboratory, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and service quality standards.
This role involves providing expert scientific advice, overseeing diagnostic testing, and fostering the development of professional practices to meet the needs of Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.
The incumbent will apply specialist scientific knowledge and independent judgement in analyzing patient specimens, validating results, and offering guidance to clinical units.
Additionally, the position requires effective leadership of a multidisciplinary team, with accountability for human resources, financial management, and strategic planning in alignment with Pathology Queensland's goals.
The role requires advanced skills in clinical microbiology, staff management, and resource allocation to maintain professional and ethical standards and ensure accreditation compliance.
The successful applicant will be responsible for quality improvement initiatives, stakeholder collaboration, and representing the laboratory on key committees.
They will also develop and mentor staff to ensure a high-performing team.
Applicants must hold a relevant degree in Medical Laboratory Science and demonstrate expertise in diagnostic microbiology and management.
A commitment to supporting 24/7 operations and providing after-hours advice is also required.

Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional, and remote Queensland and plays a critical role in the government's response to public health threats, epidemics, and civil emergencies.
PQ offers laboratory services in the disciplines of anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology, and genomics.
PQ also provides expert analysis, scientific testing, and advice to maintain and improve our public and environmental health, and to support the coronial system in Queensland.
