Student Learning Advisor Geelong, Australia Overview and Objectives of the Position: The Student Learning Advisors work collaboratively with the Student Services and Academic teams in the development and provision of learning support to the diverse student body.
This role is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies for language, Maths and IT enhancement; supporting improvement in study skills; counselling students on poor academic performance; and assisting students with the transition to an Australian higher education learning environment.
Key Responsibilities : Develop, implement and monitor programs, resources and services that promote the academic success of students, improve student engagement and/or outcomes, and report on these to the relevant committees Provide individual counselling to students with regard to academic performance, program/course advice, academic policies and procedures, program progression, transition to University and other study-related areas Contribute to strategies and projects to support student retention, including Orientation Participate in at risk/intervention programs in collaboration with Academic and Student Services teams Assist with academic language and/or Maths/IT development and help establish student academic support networks Refer students to the Student Counsellor and other core professional services as appropriate Maintain awareness of the regulatory environment as it relates to student support and ensure compliance with external and internal policy frameworks Provide individual or group assistance with assignments, skills building and academic language proficiency, and provide support for students with English as a Second Language and/or disabilities Liaise with College and University staff, as well as professional organisations on issues related to student academic progress and transition to College/University life For specialist areas such as Academic English and/or Maths/IT: Develop, implement and monitor programs and services which assist with the development of study skills and proficiency Teach weighted and non-weighted courses focused on academic English proficiency and/or remedial Maths/IT skills Undertake research and scholarly activity on learning activities in higher education that will inform innovative practice in the area of academic language/Maths/IT development and provision of learning support Undertake periodic data collection and analysis to report on findings, including possible links between established requirements or processes and students' outcomes Qualifications and Selection Criteria Bachelor (or higher) qualification in a relevant discipline (i.e. Education, English, Maths or IT) or equivalent practical experience in a related role within higher education or similar Demonstrated ability to teach academic skills to individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds Highly developed oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to consult and liaise with a wide range of people from a diverse range of backgrounds Ability to work with minimal supervision, to manage conflicting priorities and to meet deadlines Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to the development and delivery of strategies aimed at improving student learning outcomes Commitment to providing quality customer service to students with a strong focus on accurate and timely advice Competency using Microsoft 365 and/or Google software, and a willingness and ability to quickly adapt to new computer systems/programs Understanding of privacy, security and confidentiality as it relates to working with students and sensitive data and systems Legal right to work in Australia Ability to get and maintain a Working with Children Check Recent experience as a student in a higher education environment Qualification or experience in working with students with English as a Second Language Fluent in a language other than English Knowledge of Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 and National Code (2007) About us
