The Staff Engineer is responsible for coordinating operations, equipment, and junior staff in the Mechatronics Teaching Lab, and in the teaching and research Makerspaces in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME).
The Staff Engineer will provide expert advice, supervision, guidance and technical support to researchers and students in the field of Mechatronic Engineering. They work closely with researchers, key educators and other engineers to investigate and design new technologies and equipment for use in teaching and research activities. The role also ensures that relevant Work, Health and Safety standards are met and are aligned to the University's WHS policy and relevant legislation.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
Manage the mechatronics teaching laboratories, including meeting the needs and objectives of users in a sustainable manner.Provide timely, effective and sound technical support and advice to staff, researchers and students conducting work in areas related to mechatronics engineering.Working with the Senior Staff Engineer, coordinate staff activities and resourcing in teaching and research makerspaces.Ensure that the AMME laboratory systems, reporting, and documentation requirements are met, including governance and ethics reporting.Working with other TSS staff across the faculty of engineering, drive the implementation of service improvements, service excellence and operational efficiencies.Champion best practice workplace health and safety and compliance.Provide financial management support for the mechatronics teaching laboratories.About you We are looking for a candidate with:
Tertiary qualifications in either Mechatronic or Electrical Engineering disciplines.Experience with the operation and management of a mechatronics or electronics workshop, makerspace or similar.Experience with the delivery of teaching in a tertiary education setting.A strong belief in life-long learning, the importance of teaching others, and the promotion of engineering for the common good.Experience with the design and build of mechatronic/robotics systems, especially in a research and development setting.Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders.Sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within a mechatronic or electronics laboratory with demonstrated experience in implementing safety procedures.Experience with database systems, network communication, and/or web-based application development is highly desirable.Benefits of working at the University of Sydney:
