We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT.What Will You Do?
The Aboriginal Child and Family Advocacy and Support (ACFAS) is an ALS NSW ACT program working with parents and carers at risk of having their children removed, before cases get to court. ACFAS offers non-legal advocacy and legal advice and representation in Dubbo, Moree and surrounding towns.We are looking for lawyers who are passionate about standing alongside families and supporting them to have a more positive experience when interacting with the care and protection system.Each Day, You Can Expect To:
Provide early intervention legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and caregivers in child protection and family law mattersPrepare and research representation of Aboriginal clients in criminal child protection and family law mattersPrepare briefs for counsel and attend to instructing counsel as directedAs directed, act as a mentor to more junior solicitors regarding law and procedure and the operations of the ALSWho Are We Looking For?
You are a highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:Possess a current NSW Practising CertificateKnowledge and understanding of NSW Care and Protection and Family Law, along with a commitment to social justiceStrong communication, research, and problem-solving skillsAbility to meet deadlines and manage a diverse workloadPossess a valid NSW drivers license and willing to travel within the ACFAS region.Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices in dealing with clients, their families, communities and staff.Why Join Us?
