About the Sydney Informatics Hub The Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) is a University Core Research Facility serving academics and researchers across all faculties through the provision of comprehensive research data services.
SIH provides comprehensive data services to the University's research community, through consulting, training and support for bioinformatics, data science, AI, research computing, software engineering, and statistics.
SIH is an official node of the Australian Bio Commons, which aims to enhance the productivity, capability and capacity of Australian research biologists and research bioinformaticians.
About the opportunity In this role, you will manage a team of software engineers based at the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) to deliver data analytics and management tools, and platforms to the life science community, as a part of the Australian Bio Commons' Bio Cloud.
The Bio Cloud delivers national computational infrastructure for life-sciences through platforms like the Australian Cardiovascular disease Data Commons Project, computation platforms like Seqera Platform, Galaxy Australia, and other related projects such as a common Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI).
Bio Cloud's services respond to national priorities like precision medicine, biosecurity, and environmental conservation.
Your group will deliver functional enhancements to advanced open-source software solutions as a part of the Bio Cloud team.
The Bio Cloud team utilises a range of technologies including commercial cloud, high-performance computing, and web-based platforms.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of the life sciences and software development, enabling new capabilities for Australian researchers.
Your key responsibilities will be to: Work in a collaborative, dynamic and multidisciplinary team reporting to the Informatics Team Lead Effectively manage and mentor a team of two software engineers initially and up to 6 software engineers in future, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation Collaborate with Australian Bio Commons and other Sydney Informatics Hub teams to develop a portfolio of impactful cyberinfrastructure projects supporting the life sciences, including: AAI infrastructure across all of Bio Cloud's services Efficiently integrating open-source software with Cloud and HPC systems, as well as developing cloud-based web-applications to meet life science researchers' needs Ensure operational excellence through code quality, documentation, and team collaboration Contribute to the strategic direction of SIH and the Bio Cloud project in conjunction with leadership Build stakeholder relationships with other leaders at the University, the Australian Bio Commons leadership and nationally to enable collaboration and knowledge-sharing About you You are an experienced software engineering leader with a passion for life sciences and a desire to create impact.
You bring: Postgraduate qualification, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training in a relevant field Extensive experience in software and web development , involving Python, React, and Next JS (Other equivalent experience will also be considered) Proven experience with modern software engineering best practices including source code management, version control, integrated testing, and CI/CD Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor teams in a collaborative, agile environment Strong organizational and project management skills , with the ability to collaborate effectively, handle competing priorities and deliver in a fast-paced environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to foster and maintain diverse relationships between internal and external stakeholders Higher education experience would be highly regarded.
