Department: Cancer Services - Alfred Hospital

The Department The Social Work Department operates in accordance with the philosophy and goals of The Alfred. A focus on quality of life and participation in care is a primary goal of the Department. Social Work aims to identify and address the psychosocial impacts of illness and hospitalization for patients and their families by providing a range of services which increase quality of life and participation in care. Social Work also assists patients and their families with a smooth transition from hospital to home.
The Role The Social Worker is responsible for the provision of advanced social work services to patients and their families/significant others within The Alfred Hospital. Responsibilities include:
Consulting with colleagues and staff from other disciplines on relevant issues as required. Providing advanced casework expertise. Completing comprehensive psychosocial assessments. Understanding hospital discharge planning processes. Performing work that requires special knowledge and depth of experience in Family Violence, Child Protection, and NDIS processes and supports. Working with an Electronic Medical Record. The Grade 2 Social Worker in Alfred Cancer is responsible for the provision of advanced social work services to inpatients and their families/significant others within the Alfred Cancer service, supporting Oncology, Radiotherapy, Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Palliative care patients. This role will require:
Consultation with colleagues and staff from other disciplines. Completion of comprehensive psycho-social assessments. Ensuring linkages with relevant cancer, community, and support services. Advanced counselling and adjustment counselling skills. Ability to work at any or all campuses of Alfred Health as required. Ability to work one weekend day per month. Skills/Qualifications Required Essential: Eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Bachelor of Social Work, or recognized equivalent. Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and with families, exhibiting initiative and facilitative qualities. Knowledge of current legislation and policy in relation to Social Work in a hospital setting. Desirable: Working towards or postgraduate qualifications in Social Work or a related field.
