SNAP-PY Aboriginal Student Scholarship Opportunity 2025 Are you an Aboriginal person looking for an Honours, Master's or PhD opportunity from 2025? Our Healthy Skin team is looking for an Aboriginal student to join an exciting project in the Boorloo (Perth) area! Telethon Kids Institute is excited to partner with medical research institutes, universities and many hospitals across Australia and the world to embark on the biggest research project attempted in the Staphylococcus aureus domain, fighting this bacteria by discovering the best ways to treat infections. The Staphylococcus aureus Network Adaptive Platform (SNAP) is the most ambitious clinical trial for bloodstream infection globally to date, involving 11 countries, >100 sites and a projected 7000 patients. Research is underway in Australia, New Zealand, Israel, South Africa, Netherlands, Canada, Singapore, USA and the United Kingdom. SNAP aims to identify which antibiotic treatment options result in the least patients dying and improved outcomes. In contrast to a traditional clinical trial, the SNAP trial will examine multiple different antibiotic treatment options at the same time. In Australia, Aboriginal children have double the rate of Staphylococcus aureus compared to non-Aboriginal children due to high rates of skin infections and social determinants of health. The results from the trial are expected to see Aboriginal children from regional WA be able to spend less time away from Country and have better long-term outcomes. The SNAP trial in Australia has an Aboriginal Advisory Committee and Aboriginal Community Project Coordinator to advise and enhance cultural safety for Aboriginal people participating in the trial. More research is needed on this, which a student would have the opportunity to lead. Under the guidance of Professor Asha Bowen OAM, you will be well supported and at the heart of the paediatric aspects of the trial. SNAP-PY has a range of projects for an Aboriginal student to undertake within the team. Scholarships to support an Aboriginal student are available as well as there being an opportunity for employment one day a week with Telethon Kids Institute if this is of interest. Want to meet the team in person? We'll be at the Telethon Kids Institute's Prospective Students Night on 2nd September 2024 at the Perth Children's Hospital.
