The Opportunity An exciting opportunity is available for both a Site and Mine Geologist to work within a small team of highly experienced geologists, where your primary purpose will be to ensure that coal recovery is carried out in line with the Mine Plan.
The Site Geologist at Byerwen is the lead role in identifying key risks and opportunities in resource knowledge and liaising with the QCoal Exploration team to aid planning, coordination, and execution of exploration activities.
The position is also responsible for collating data and updating the geological resource model for operational use.
This position will best suited to a dynamic individual with a proven track record of an experience within the mining industry in a similar role.
Key responsibilities include: Conducting detailed geological logging, soil and rock sampling, and geological mapping to assess coal seams, stratigraphy, and mineralogy, supporting resource estimation and mine planning Working closely with site management and mine geologists to optimise coal extraction operations, minimise geological risks, and ensure accurate integration of geological data into mine planning and production scheduling Utilising geological databases and software to create 3D coal resource models, conduct resource estimation, and ensure compliance with industry standards for reporting (e.g., JORC Code) to support mine planning and reserve estimation.
Leading coal exploration and drilling programs, overseeing core logging, sample collection, and quality control processes to accurately define coal resources and guide future mining development Monitoring geotechnical conditions, including ground stability, water ingress, and coal seam characteristics, to identify potential hazards and provide recommendations to mitigate risks and ensure safe mining operations.
Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., mine engineers, environmental teams, regulators) to ensure timely resource and reserve estimations, and to efficiently execute coal geological work programs Supporting geological processes and ensuring compliance with land access, exploration, and mining regulations.
Promoting and leading a safety-first mindset throughout coal mining operations, ensuring adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards in geological processes and site activities About you: A Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geology or other relevant qualifications Minimum 3 years experience in coal geology with a demonstrated ability to design and execute geological work programs Knowledge of structural geology and coal quality Demonstrated ability to work independently in regional and remote locations Excellent planning and organisational skills with a proven ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously Excellent written and verbal communication skills Software skills using data collection software and MS Office Familiarity with at least one of the following geological databases; Geobank, acQuire, LogCheck or TaskManager Open drivers license Ability to work autonomously in a small team and show initiative Mackay based or willing to relocate Ideally you will also possess Experience in mine geology and / or site geology Current Queensland competencies, including Coal Board Medical, Standard 11 and S123, G2 or willing to obtain; First Aid Certificate or willing to obtain; Experience with ArcGIS, and/or Vulcan highly regarded;
