Details of the offer

Do you have a passion for keeping you and your colleagues safe? Have meticulous attention to detail and want to work as part of a supportive team? If so, then apply to be the Work Health & Safety Advisor. Reporting to the General Manager People & Systems but working closely with the project delivery teams, you will not only support our current safety systems but have the opportunity to develop them to ensure that Shaw is a safe and healthy place to work.
Based in our Launceston office, but there is a requirement for extensive travel within Tasmania.
Whilst compliance with the requirements of the regulations is of course a key part of this role, we are a mature company with well-developed processes and as a result, you will be able to focus on balanced incremental improvement, not radical change and will have the opportunity to take the time to understand existing processes and work with appropriate stakeholders in a collaborative way, utilising their knowledge and experience.
Key Responsibilities Support and communicate effectively with all levels of the business to promote a zero-harm environment where safety, risk and compliance are proactively and positively managed. Provide appropriate level advice to all areas of the business on workers safety issues, interpretation of safety legislation and compliance with legislative requirements. Support, develop, and maintain Shaw's safe system of work, policies, safe work procedures and tools including; risk assessments, risk registers, hazard identification and assessment, control measures, and WHS documentation. Support the completion of WHS documentation by workers, through advice and training. Consult, review and assess safety documentation including safe work procedures, risk assessments, incident reports and emergency procedures and maintain records of documentation. Undertake investigations and assessment where incidents or risks are identified or reported and ensure preventative responses are implemented. Support the WHS Committee by coordinating meetings and monitoring of committee actions. Delivery of WHS and occupational training as identified and requested. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives. Support the organisation in other relevant tasks as identified by the General Manager People & Systems. As the successful applicant you will enjoy working closely with staff to become the leader of our safety culture. You will need to be flexible, willing to consider alternate opinions and be comfortable receiving feedback around your suggestions and ideas.
As the Safety Leader you will be naturally meticulous but most importantly, willing to learn, especially in the first three months, as you gain an understanding of our current systems and requirements. This role includes both spending time in the field with our project delivery teams and administrative work, and requires attention to detail, exceptional organisational skills as well as a genuine commitment to safety.
To succeed in this role, you must have a confident, positive attitude, have a passion for delivering outcomes, in addition to being a clear and effective communicator that can prioritise and work within deadlines.
The role will require you to be comfortable with regular follow ups to ensure changes are effectively imbedded in an inclusive and non-punitive way. Whilst being direct and clear in your instructions, you will also have the ability to adjust your delivery style as needed to ensure messages are understood.
Minimum Requirements Certificate 4 in Work Health and Safety, or a related discipline, with relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of skills and experience. Demonstrated knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, regulations and their application in the workplace. Experience in undertaking WHS inspections and documenting findings and actions required. Demonstrated ability to provide practical advice to management and employees (verbally & in writing). Demonstrated computer skills and competency. Workplace trainer/assessor or the willingness to achieve the qualification. Current Tasmanian drivers licence and ability to operate a manual vehicle.
