This position will work within the Animal Production Sciences Unit of Agriculture Victoria Research (AVR) Branch to develop innovative farming systems that deliver productivity improvement and environmental benefits to the dairy industry.
This is achieved through innovative research and science excellence, supported by technical efficiency, business processes, technology adoption and knowledge management.
The position of Senior Technical Officer will manage and provide technical leadership to the Animal Production Sciences group based at Ellinbank and Hamilton, including overseeing and managing staff, field equipment and infrastructure.
In addition, this position will play a pivotal role in the development of the Ellinbank SmartFarm through the identification and implementation of new and emerging technologies that will contribute to farm and research goals.
The incumbent will play a key advice role in project development and provide high level technical specialist support to dairy research projects including the management of research animals, establishment, management and maintenance of experimental field/laboratory work, sampling and sample analyses, and management of key stakeholders associated with the research.
This position has a key role in developing work plans in consultation with scientists and the Research Farm Manager to ensure that all project workplans and milestones can be completed within budget and on time.
This position will support farm management activities at both the Ellinbank and Hamilton SmartFarms.
The successful applicant will work effectively as a member of a team, enjoy flexible working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the branch.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/QualificationsAn appropriate tertiary qualification in agricultural science or an equivalent qualification.Extensive experience working with large ruminant livestock.Demonstrated high-level knowledge of livestock production systems, experimental methods and activities, including pasture agronomy and animal nutrition and performance, and knowledge of animal ethics compliance.High level knowledge of sensor technologies to measure pasture and animal performance and their applicability within research activities and dairy systems.Extensive experience in the implementation of technologies to improve profitability, reduce energy usage and waste streams and contribute to a goal of carbon neutrality in dairy systems.Demonstrated leadership experience in building motivated and high performing teams that are able to deliver against goals within time and on budget.Demonstrated ability to collect, maintain accurate and logically set out data/records and an effective working knowledge of MS Excel spreadsheets and other databases.Excellent understanding of WHS procedures and obligations with respect to training and supervision of staff, including casuals, undertaking risk assessments and development of safe operating procedures.This is a fixed term position available for a period of 36 Months.
