Supporting the Structural Engineering Lab , this role is perfect for someone with a trade background seeking a new and exciting position. A background as a Fitter and Turner, Boiler Maker or Carpenter would be ideal but any hands on, practical experience, paired with an innovative and driven personality would be welcome to join the team. In addition to technical skills the ability to embrace technology is required.As a Senior Technical Officer, Civil Engineering you'll have day to day variety with no two days being the same, the freedom to plan your work day, as well as an exciting work environment where you're involved in different projects and research.You'll be joining a close knit, collaborative team who support each other so it's essential that you are someone who is personable and motivated to work both independently and within in a team.As a Senior Technical Officer, Civil Engineering, you will:Proactively engage with teaching activities, in collaboration with academic staff, by providing specialist knowledge and training on how to work on equipment and engineering software relevant to the Civil engineering and related disciplines. This will include student activities related to teaching in coursework, Higher Degrees by Research (PhD or Masters) or final year projectsResearch, propose, coordinate and implement technical solutions to support the strategic initiatives and operations of the School of EngineeringEnsure that laboratory equipment is maintained and operated to a safe and high standard and carry out minor repairs to equipment and coordinate with stakeholders within Deakin or outside service engineers as necessary including calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment.Support various laboratory projects for teaching and research as required, including outreach, industry engagement and inter school activities.Ensure the implementation of and compliance with of all University policies that relate to occupational health and safety and risk management, to ensure a safe working environment for all persons involved in the areaSupport teaching and research within the school through the construction of experimental equipment and purchasing of materialsPrepare and assist with the running of practical experiments for studentsCreate training and safety materials and ensure safety processes are being adhered toSupport final year research students with the practical component of their thesis, typically making concrete with alternative aggregates and additives.To be successful, you'll have:Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields or,An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. This may include working in a concrete production and testing environment or, steel or timber fabrication and testing environment.
