Primary objective: This position provides high quality policy advice to the Attorney-General, departmental executives and government agencies on strategic justice policy and reform issues affecting the Northern Territory and supports implementation and evaluation of strategic initiatives linked to the department's strategic objectives and Northern Territory Government priorities.
Context statement: The Strategic Policy Unit is a specialist team overseeing the development and implementation of significant justice policy reforms, managing justice sector stakeholder engagement and the management of legal grants.
Key duties and responsibilities: Support the development and review of strategic policy through cross agency-coordination on significant justice projects and reform priorities.
Work collaboratively across the agency and broader government efforts, seeking and providing expert advice as relevant to ensure alignment and coordination in progressing the priorities of the NT Government across the justice policy enablers.
Act as a conduit between policy areas and management to identify policy related links between areas.
Monitor implementation of existing policies and conduct reviews and/or evaluations to inform future policy development.
Provide critical evidence-based analysis and strategic advice across a range of strategic policy and projects impacting the justice sector including through Cabinet Submissions, ministerial, briefing papers and other correspondence as required.
Build and maintain effective, trusted partnerships and collaborative relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders.
Selection criteria: Essential: Highly developed expertise and experience in the development of policy, research, critical analysis and provision of high-level advice, demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with influence through the provision of clear and considered advice that reflects sound research and the use of strategic, conceptual and analytical skills.
Demonstrated experience in preparing briefings or reports on complex matters for a wide range of audiences in plain English.
Demonstrated experience in undertaking and coordinating work assignments, demonstrating initiative, and planning and management skills; and demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes working effectively with team members.
Sound knowledge and understanding of contemporary and strategic justice issues facing the Northern Territory and of government policies and strategies to address these issues.
High level interpersonal skills including proven liaison, negotiation and consultation with both government and external stakeholders; and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline obtained from an Australian tertiary institution.
