The goal of the Corporate Statistics Unit is to aid the enhancement of organisational performance through the application of statistical and data management expertise to provide timely access to organisational data and drive data-focussed decision making. The VPS5 Senior Statistician is a key technical expert and strategic contributor within the Corporate Statistics Unit (CSU). This position bridges the gap between the operational aspects of CSU and the management layer and collaborates closely with the manager to develop and refine statistical strategies. It has no structured direct reports however as a senior member of team is expected to guide and mentor the junior team members to enhance skills and proficiency, and ensure overall service delivery is met. Your duties will include: Engage in conversations with stakeholders to establish needs Understand priorities at a strategic level and ensure tasking and delegation is appropriate Provide written updates to management in a variety of formats, including executive briefs Contribute to and lead team culture, including relating to mentoring and technical knowledge sharing Perform statistical analysis, generate reports, or write data queries in SAS (experience not necessary, see attached role statement for context) As the successful applicant, you will have: Problem solving: Strong analytical problem-solving skills and critical thinking to both gather insights from data and evaluate the business practices within the team. Leadership: Effective leadership and collaboration with senior members of the team to collectively inspire, motivate, and guide a team of statisticians towards achieving common goals. Strategic thinking: Ability to align the capabilities and deliverables of the team with broader organisational objectives. Anticipating future trends and opportunities, and taking the initiative to explore these autonomously, and communicating findings to management. Communication: Clear and concise communication skills to convey complex statistical concepts and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering understanding and support. Collaboration: Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, creating a culture of teamwork and cooperation. A willingness to learn and be open to different perspectives. Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changing priorities, requirements, and environments in a fast-paced corporate setting. Data literacy and statistical methodologies: Experience in at least mid-level functionality of Excel or a programming language, which can translate to being comfortable with data wrangling when querying a relational database in SAS.
