In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation and advice to our clients, with a focus on criminal law matters.What you'll be doingRepresent clients in criminal court proceedings, including bail applications, pleas, trials and appealsAdvise clients on criminal law matters and their legal rights and optionsConduct legal research, prepare legal documents, and liaise with relevant stakeholdersMaintain detailed and accurate case files and recordsContribute to the development and implementation of NAAJA's legal strategies and policiesCollaborate with the wider legal team to ensure the provision of a comprehensive and effective legal serviceMentor junior staff and provide guidance and support as requiredWhat we're looking forAdmission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory with a minimum of 5 years post-admission experienceSignificant experience in criminal law, with a strong understanding of the legal system and court proceduresExcellent legal research, writing and advocacy skillsAbility to communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgroundsStrong organisational and time management skillsCommitment to social justice and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communitiesRequirementsCurrent Driver's LicenceAbility to obtain a satisfactory "Working with Children Clearance" (Ochre Card) upon commencementSatisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practiceAbility and willingness to travel to remote areasHow to applyApplicants for this position must submit a cover letter and resume addressing the essential criteria.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
