The purpose of the role is to assist the Principal Scientist to provide leadership, scientific and technical direction to a small team of remote sensing scientists responsible for delivering the Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS). Your role will include the analysis, interpretation and integration of satellite data, digital spatial data and field information to inform comprehensive reporting about the state's woody vegetation.
The role reports to the Principal Scientist.
As the Senior Scientist you will:
• Contribute to the research, development, operational implementation and continuous improvement of methods and standards for mapping and monitoring vegetation and other land cover.
• Manage, process, and analyse satellite imagery and digital spatial data in a highperformance computing environment and Geographic Information Systems.
• Undertake expert interpretation of satellite imagery, other digital imagery and spatial data to map and monitor land cover and vegetation change.
• Undertake and co-lead quality checking, and implement data management standards to ensure data quality and mapping accuracy.
• Lead or contribute to field data collection using a range of techniques for calibration and validation of mapping products derived from remote sensing imagery.
• Supervise, mentor and manage a small team of scientific and technical staff.
• Develop and deliver high quality, scientifically defensible products, publications and reporting tools.
• Work closely with others and contribute to a team environment.
• Represent DESI in relevant professional and scientific forums and provide advice.
• Communicate and translate complex scientific information to a range of audiences.
• Establish and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships with a range of stakeholders.
• Support and utilise the governance policy and procedure, systems, activities and processes within the work unit to fulfil all obligations under legislation including the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and the Financial Accountability Act 2009.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
