The Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (DRMDW) drives growth for Queensland by managing sustainable water resources, leading innovation in manufacturing, and developing our regions. From our offices in Brisbane and a network of regional offices and manufacturing hubs, more than 700 DRDMW staff work to create a Queensland where communities, businesses and water resources are sustainable and resilient.
The Role In this leadership role, you will oversee one of three Aquatic Ecology science teams in Northern Queensland, responsible for delivery of a range of science project focussed on freshwater aquatic ecosystems in the Gulf water plan area. You will spend time out in the Gulf catchments undertaking fieldwork, as well as time in the office and talking to stakeholders. You will provide professional science leadership, design and deliver freshwater monitoring projects, prepare reports and deliver high quality technical and scientific advice. These activities will ultimately inform water management decisions and water planning to sustainably manage water resources across the state. The role can be based in scenic Cairns, Mareeba, Townsville, Ayr, Mackay
preferred, with all locations across Queensland considered.
Key Accountabilities: • Provide specialist advice, recommendations and input to policy and water planning on issues related to flow management and aquatic ecosystems.
• Communicate internally and externally and build linkages and partnerships with industry representatives, educational institutions, natural resource agencies, research organisations and community groups to ensure the ongoing relevance of the services provided.
• Design and manage aquatic ecosystem monitoring programs in North Queensland relevant to the Gulf Water Plan and assist the team in undertaking
fieldwork in other areas of the state from time to time in line with the agreed work program.
• Prepare reports and other written and verbal advice and briefs as required. Ensure the requirements of clients and collaborators are satisfied through the
efficient, effective and timely delivery of project milestones and outputs, in accordance with agreed outcomes.
About You • You will require a Bachelor Degree in Agricultural or Environmental Science, Applied Science or Natural Resource Management. A post-graduate qualification is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated previous experience in monitoring freshwater ecosystems.
• Knowledge of freshwater fish ecology, turtle ecology, groundwater dependent ecosystems or another freshwater ecology specialisation.
• Well developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Hold a current "C" class manual driver's licence or equivalent.
• Out-of-hours and weekend work may be required in remote areas.
