About the role An opportunity has become available for Full Time Senior Scientific Officer at our Ashford Laboratory, SA.
Your role will be to participate in the day to day operation of the laboratory, working as part of a dedicated team and assist the SIC in managing laboratory staff, processes, budgets, and training, ensuring high standards in specimen processing, result authorisation, and equipment maintenance. Duties include Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion work, maintenance of instrumentation and equipment and compliance with accreditation and quality assurance requirements. The preferred applicants will be flexible, punctual, self-motivated, display initiative and be able to work with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities: Staff Management:Train and support scientists, technicians, and assistants. Communicate performance issues to the SIC. Help with recruitment and manage staff rosters. Work Process Management:Organise and prioritise workloads. Maintain equipment and resolve issues promptly. Ensure timely turnaround, especially for urgent specimens. Develop and maintain department methodologies. Ensure result quality and collaborate with the Pathologist and SIC if issues arise. Budget & Planning:Assist with operational planning and budget management. Ensure efficient use of resources and work to reduce costs while improving quality. Training & Education:Assess staff competencies and support ongoing training. Develop training materials and participate in educational activities. Specimen Processing:Process routine pathology specimens and perform quality checks. Prioritise lab requests and evaluate specimen suitability. Ensure quality control samples are within acceptable limits. Result Authorisation:Validate and authorise results before reporting. Interpret results and ensure they align with clinical information. Make decisions on reporting results or repeating tests. Participate in the upkeep of the lab and equipment. Ensure preventative maintenance and keep work areas clean and organised. Quality Control:Monitor and address any quality control issues. Review and record details of QC results and actions taken. Urgent & Abnormal Results:Ensure critical results are communicated to the responsible person promptly. Take immediate action to report life-threatening or urgent results. Other Duties:Perform other duties as required by the department. Required Skills and Qualifications Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or a science degree with subjects relevant to the field of Pathology, or an overseas qualification which has been assessed as by AIMS as being equivalent. Minimum 3 years' experience in a Clinical Laboratory. Relevant experience and qualification in specialised discipline Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion. Strong written and verbal skills; able to communicate clearly with staff, medical professionals, and the public. Open to feedback, self-aware, and able to manage emotions in the workplace. Guides and develops team members through feedback, coaching, and task delegation. Friendly, respectful, and culturally aware when interacting with others. Organised and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Works well with others and contributes to a positive team environment. Proactive and effective at solving challenges quickly and efficiently.
