Senior Safety Specialist

The City has a unique and exciting opportunity for a Work, Health and Safety specialist to join our organisation. We are looking for a driven professional to lead our Work Health & Safety team in the implementation and ongoing continuous improvement of WHS systems.
This position will coordinate the implementation, ongoing maintenance and improvement of the City WHS system and practices, and contribute to effective safety, health and wellbeing planning and performance management across the organisation.
This is a full time, five (5) year fixed term position with the possibility of extension.
Key accountabilities:
Support the effective implementation of the WHS management system and champion for driving a high safety culture throughout Council.
Support the development, review and continuous improvement of the WHS and Injury Management systems, and practices to ensure standards would comply with the self-insurance framework and legislative requirements.
Actively participate in the People Safety & Wellbeing team to drive safety performance across Council, identify and recommend health, safety and environment training and development activities and promotions.
Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, local and statutory regulations including the requirements of the Code of Conduct, EEO principles, the Work Health and Safety Act and the Local Government Act.
Position requirements:
The City is seeking a self-motivated Safety Specialist with comprehensive experience implementing WHS Systems and ensuring organisational compliance to WHS legislation. Ideally the successful applicant will possess a degree in Work Health & Safety and relevant experience or lesser qualification with extensive experience.
Comprehensive experience leading a Work, Health & Safety team is a must, and demonstrated experience collaborating with leadership teams are highly regarded.
Completion of a pre-employment medical including alcohol and other substances testing is required of all positions at the City.
Remuneration and benefits:
This role is offered as a five (5) year fixed term contract and a remuneration package commensurate to knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications will be offered.

Extensive diverse experience in the practical application of WHS processes in a variety of work settings, including the conduct of hazard inspections, audits, risk assessments, accident/incident investigations, tool box meetings, and training and advising internal stakeholders
Effective understanding and proficiency in applying the underlying principles and standards of WHS including the interpretation of legislation and Australian Standards
Comprehensive communication skills with a proven ability to build and sustain partnerships as well as negotiate and influence at all levels in order to continuously improve corporate and operational WHS performance
Excellent analytical, evaluation and problem-solving skills enabling research and provision of technical advice and assessments in various workplaces
