The appointee will focus on leading R&I programs and projects that aim to improve the productivity and profitability of pasture-based dairy systems. This is achieved through innovative R&I and science excellence, supported by technical efficiency, business processes, technology adoption and knowledge management. The appointee will contribute to other associated dairy and livestock research strategies, project development and organisational activities across APS and AVR, including the development of the Ellinbank SmartFarm.The successful applicant is also expected to manage, lead and supervise research scientists and post graduate students. The position will require a well-developed knowledge of more than one discipline. These include an excellent understanding of agricultural systems, farming systems, ruminant nutrition, the interaction of different supplements on rumen function and production, grazing management and forage management. The successful applicant will be expected to successfully manage projects. Besides program and project work, the successful applicant is expected to contribute time to broader Departmental activities including contributing to strategic planning and decision making as required, including supporting collaboration opportunities at other AVR SmartFarms and AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBiosciencesSpecialist/Technical Expertise/QualificationsA PhD in animal physiology or ruminant nutrition or related discipline, with post graduate training and relevant work experience, is required.Highly developed critical analysis and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to design, conduct, evaluate and report on, and present research findings, including a track record of scientific publications.A comprehensive understanding of the key issues facing the Victorian dairy and livestock industries.Demonstrated research experience in ruminant nutrition, animal performance or physiology in pasture-based systems, preferably with knowledge of the implementation of non-destructive sensor technologies and the subsequent interpretation of generated information, coupled with at least 5 years postdoctoral research experience.Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff, design, and develop projects, attract funding, and effectively lead multi-disciplinary research project teams, work with minimal supervision, and display high levels of initiative.A thorough understanding of the principles of Work Health and Safety (WH&S), the application of Animal Ethics standards to research projects, ability to effectively supervise technical staff and resolve issues that arise and the supervision of postgraduate studentsThis is a fixed term part-time (0.6 FTE) position available for a period until 24 October 2025.
