The University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH), Rural Clinical School- Northern Rivers, University of Sydney provides a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in education of students for clinical practice in rural health.
We also conduct research relevant to the priorities and needs of rural communities, with a focus on Aboriginal health research, climate change and health impacts, education research and health services research.
The UCRH continues to grow and develop, and we are now seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow (Identified) (Level C) to work alongside A/Professor Veronica Matthews who is supported by a NHMRC Fellowship for the Healthy Country, Healthy Community research program.
Other related research includes: Stronger Together as Unified Nations for Community-Led Health (STAUNCH); and the Healthy Environments And Lives (HEAL) National Research Network of which she co-leads the First Nations Knowledges Theme.
The incumbent will be part of the leadership team delivering the vision of the research program to centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, priorities and ideas on strengthening health of Country and community.
In particular: support community-controlled primary health care (PHC) services to minimise their carbon footprint and strengthen resilience and adaptability to local climate change impacts; and facilitate alliances between PHC and Traditional Custodian organisations for holistic governance that attends to environmental determinants of health (e.g., housing, caring for Country).
We are seeking a candidate with experience and knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community sector along with research experience or a desire to strengthen research skills in these areas.
The UCRH has a footprint in the Northern Rivers, NSW, north to the Mullumbimby region, south to Grafton, west to Bonalbo and east to Ballina/ Byron, and works closely with multiple partners to support education, research and workforce development in Northern NSW.
The HEAL Network and the Healthy Country, Healthy Community research program have a national focus.
The Lismore campus is located within walking distance of the Lismore Base Hospital and, along with our other numerous community and health partners, provides opportunities to support education and research activity in the region.
While presence on campus at Lismore is preferred, other locations may be negotiated.
Your key responsibilities will be to: Build and maintain a reputation for academic excellence through independent and innovative contributions to research, expanding knowledge and practice in the discipline disseminate research knowledge and facilitate knowledge transfer to drive impact maintain a research profile, including publication in academic or professional journals and engage in keynote addresses lead successful competitive research grants and/or generate other research income by exploring diverse funding opportunities maintain quality, standards and excellence in research activities and output provide mentoring and guidance to lower-level academics make a significant and holistic contribution to the research, administrative and governance activities of the school or faculty, including participating in committees and academic boards contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled understand and contribute to furthering the university and faculty/school strategic agenda engage in community and alumni outreach, contribute expertise to public debates, and play a significant role in scholarly, research, or professional activities relevant to area of expertise establish partnerships, collaborations and engage in translational research for impactful outcomes in research, development, commercialisation, and policy improvement undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.
About you PhD in related field proven experience in leading similar research projects proven experience in primary health care and or environmental research experience working in research and/or practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander settings acknowledged at a national level as influential in expanding knowledge within the discipline experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities experience working in collaborative environments with a wide range of stakeholders including researchers, service providers, and policy makers demonstrated excellence in research or other scholarly activities relevant to the discipline established network of academic, industry and professional partners and stakeholders experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities a developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector.
