The General Surgery Senior Trainee is a key position within the Department of General Surgery and acts as the day-to-day supervisor of the junior medical officers working in this department, including SET trainees, unaccredited surgical registrars and senior RMOs. The Surgical Senior Trainee works across all three surgical units within the Department of General Surgery, namely upper GIT surgery, colorectal surgery and surgical oncology, to coordinate the care of acute admissions and elective patients. The Surgical Senior Trainee provides supervision and support to both accredited and non-accredited registrars, particularly with operative cases, and is responsible for the rostering and leave arrangements of Department registrars. The Surgical Senior Trainee is also responsible for coordinating the Department's education program for surgical and prevocational trainees. The Surgical Senior Trainee assists the Head of Department in coordinating the clinical governance and patient safety activities of the Department including morbidity and mortality meetings and has an important role in ensuring that junior medical staff fully participate in these activities. The role is flexible and allows for the Surgical Senior Trainee to work with any or all of the Department's three subspecialty units to focus on increasing their exposure to operative cases and acute care surgery within their area of subspecialty interest. In this way, the role is an ideal transition from SET training to post-fellowship training, allowing the successful candidate to build their experience and confidence in a tertiary care environment.

What you'll be doing The Senior Surgical Trainee is expected to contribute to and implement policies and procedures with respect to surgical practice; promulgate clinical governance accountabilities for surgical trainees and junior medical officers undertaking surgical terms; lead initiatives in patient handover and clinical safety with respect to surgical patients; provide education and training particularly to surgical trainees but also assist the Director Prevocational Education and Training in provision of the training program to prevocational trainees; and ensure the appropriate functioning of the short stay surgical unit.
The purpose of this position is to improve the following aspects of patient care and clinical governance:
a more timely assessment and admission of emergency department patients with acute general surgical conditions increase in within hours utilization of the operating rooms for general surgery emergency cases more timely discharge of general surgery patients with overall reduction in length of hospital stay improve the clinical governance within the general surgery departments by coordination of the morbidity and mortality meetings and CHASM reporting. improve the education and training of surgical trainees by establishing and coordinating a structured educational program improve the rostering of and management of leave for surgical trainees at St Vincent's Hospital and seconding hospitals improve the management of general surgical inpatients by junior medical staff by attending the clinical handover sessions to augment the care of trauma patients across all specialties within the hospital The successful applicant should be in their final year (SET 5) of advanced training in General Surgery with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) at the time of application and be on track for completion of all training time requirements for the FRACS prior to commencement of the 2023 clinical year. The position would ideally suit a candidate who is looking for an opportunity to gain more experience prior to applying for a consultant surgeon or fellowship position.
The opportunity exists for the successful candidate to attend public and/or private operating lists within their area of interest in general surgery in order to improve their levels of experience in their chosen subspecialty area. The position is a 0.8 FTE position. There will also be scheduled overtime as per the on-call surgical roster. The position would be for a period of twelve months and re-advertised on an annual basis.
Minimum Requirements: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia Possess Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent specialist qualification. Applicants should be in their final year (SET 5) of advanced training in General Surgery with the RACS at the time of application and be on track for completion of all training time requirements for the fellowship RACS prior to commencement of the 2025 clinical year Completion of the Part II exam for FRACS (desirable but not essential) Possess sufficient skills, knowledge and experience to practice as a safe and competent surgeon Excellent time management and demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines Demonstrated sound communication skills (written and verbal) and moderate computer skills Demonstrated ability and experience in teaching both undergraduate & postgraduate students Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Mission and Values of the Sisters of Charity and St Vincent's Health Australia.
