Assets and Engineering (A&E) enables a safe, resilient and fit-for-purpose Victorian transport system through whole of lifecycle decisions based on systematic and disciplined technical excellence. A&E influence each stage of the Victorian transport asset lifecycle to realise a reliable transport network for our communities, through policy, planning, investment and technical standards.
Our work optimises the value and sustainability of allocated resources (capital and operating) across the Victorian transport portfolio and its asset base.
The Senior Rail Engineering Technical Advisor sits within the Standards and Transport Engineering Branch (STE) of A&E and reports to the Senior Manager, Rail Engineering. They will provide expert technical advice and leadership across heavy and light rail disciplines for DTP. They are an engineering professional who has 15+ years of technical experience, with the majority being in a rail environment. The Senior Rail Engineering Technical Advisor is responsible for providing guidance and advice to the Chief Engineer, Rail, the Rail Engineering Principal Engineers, other divisions within DTP, rail transport operators (RTOs), and delivery agencies.
The Senior Rail Engineering Technical Advisor will provide technical leadership across the Rail Engineering Disciplines. This may involve:
Provide strategic thinking and input into technical issues management of key internal and external stakeholders, such as the RTOs and Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA)Represent STE in discussions with key internal and external stakeholders, including at a National level in collaboration with the Chief Engineer, RailBrief the Chief Engineer, Rail on complex technical issues arising in the Victorian Transport Network and provide recommendations for the way forwardSupport the Chief Engineer, Rail, and Rail Engineering team in the investigation, analysis, and resolution of arising technical issues. Support the technical development of asset-class strategies to inform the future requirements of the Victorian Transport NetworkSupport technical activities that ensure compliance with the DTP technical and maintenance requirements, in collaboration with the Rail Engineering Principal Engineers.To access the full position description, please click here. Support Rail Modelling activities undertaken within A&EPrepare and present reports, technical and professional documents, Ministerial briefs, and Cabinet and agency committee submissions.Ensure that the management of safety is paramount and implements sector best practice processes and procedures.Support the development of strategic and operational plans, organisational design and performance, budget preparation, and management.We are looking for a leader in rail engineering with deep expertise in providing expert advice and recommendations and a strong understanding of the Victorian Rail Networks. Your skills in evaluating and resolving complex design, operational, and stakeholder issues will be essential, and you'll demonstrate advanced research and analytical skills to anticipate trends and mitigate risks.
Your role will involve developing and drafting standards and business cases in consultation with stakeholders, backed by rigorous data analysis to ensure high-quality outcomes. As a champion of innovation and continuous improvement, you'll proactively seek opportunities to enhance processes, leveraging feedback and existing systems to boost outcomes, quality, and efficiency.
Exceptional communication skills are crucial; you'll communicate with clarity, credibility, and impact, adeptly handling sensitive topics and engaging others effectively.
