Senior Project Officer Ecologist, Ecological Monitoring.Salary - $120,859 - 133,183.Temporary full-time opportunity until 31 Dec 2026.Located in Dubbo.About the role National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Senior Project Officer to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
NPWS is delivering a three-year feral cat initiative which will deliver intensive, targeted feral cat control and monitoring at priority locations. The cat monitoring component integrates with the NPWS Ecological Health Performance Scorecards program to improve the ecological health of NSW national parks by tracking key ecological indicators and using that data to refine management actions. The program plays a key role in ensuring we meet our commitment to zero extinctions in NSW National Parks.
The Senior Project Officer Ecologist will lead the design, planning, delivery, and reporting of a key ecological health monitoring project on national park estate. Specifically, this role will design and implement monitoring to assess patterns of occurrence and density of feral cats in NPWS reserves.
The role is expected to work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure alignment of mutual objectives and integration with other programs. The role will manage a small team to support the delivery of this project, and provide input to the development and management of policies and processes to ensure best practice and innovative services to support ecological health monitoring across the national park estate.
About you To be successful in this role, you must have a proven track record in contributing to best practice ecological survey and monitoring methodologies, including:
Experience in the design, implementation, and review and evaluation of rigorous ecological monitoring plans, survey guidelines and procedures.Ability to analyze and model complex ecological datasets, including undertaking occupancy and spatial mark-recapture analyses, and working knowledge of GIS and statistical applications.A positive attitude and a desire to work effectively in a team environment with a collaborative approach.Tertiary qualification in ecology or a relevant discipline.Current Australian driver license and willingness to obtain a 4WD operation certificate.Ideally you will also be experienced in leading a small team to support the design and delivery of ecological monitoring to inform management.
The role will be required to undertake field work, day and night, sometimes in inclement weather conditions and remote locations. This will require a willingness to work in these conditions, a sound level of physical fitness and resilience, and willingness and ability to travel across NSW at times in light aircraft.
