Together the two companies have been working on research and scale up of mineral carbonation technology at the University of Newcastle (UON) for over 11 years.
As part of this collaboration, a mineral carbonation pilot plant facility is in operation at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER) at the UON Callaghan campus.
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Process Engineer to join our team.
This position offers a diverse and dynamic work environment, where you will play a crucial role in operating MCi's mineral carbonation pilot plant.About The RoleThe Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of MCi's pilot plant reactors, ensuring optimal performance and alignment with both internal and external work programs.
In addition to overseeing operation and maintenance, this role will require significant engagement with commercialization efforts, focusing on process improvements and their effective implementation.
The Senior Process Engineer will also lead and mentor junior engineering staff, fostering professional growth and ensuring smooth knowledge transfer within the team.Qualifications & experienceDegree in Chemical Engineering or degree in Science, majoring in Chemistry or Material Science.Strong commitment to Safe Work & OHS Understanding.At least 5–7 years of progressive experience in plant operations, process engineering, or related industrial settings.Demonstrated success in scaling up processes from pilot to commercial scale.Proven track record of collaboration with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, and commercial/marketing.Deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, including reaction engineering, heat/mass transfer, and process optimization.Proficiency in analyzing pilot plant data to inform process improvements, troubleshooting, and scalability.Experience with process simulation and modelling tools (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS) is a plus.Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.Effective stakeholder management, both internally and externally.Tasks & responsibilitiesOversee the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of MCi's pilot plant reactors.Monitor and optimize equipment performance to meet R&D and commercial deliverables.Troubleshoot operational issues, implement corrective actions, and document outcomes.Identify, evaluate, and drive process improvements to enhance pilot plant productivity and performance.Collaborate with vendors and internal stakeholders to ensure modifications and enhancements are aligned with MCi's strategic goals.Develop and manage implementation plans for new equipment or technology upgrades.Work closely with the Business Development and Commercial teams to translate pilot-scale data into commercially viable processes.Provide technical expertise during technology scale-up, ensuring a seamless transition from pilot to full-scale operations.Contribute to market-facing technical documentation, presentations, and stakeholder meetings.Serve as a subject matter expert, particularly in chemical engineering concepts related to pilot plant operations.Support the company's technology scale-up efforts including assisting programs on the Myrtle industrial demonstration plant.Advise cross-functional teams on process design, system integration, and optimization strategies.Continuously evaluate and adopt industry best practices to maintain MCi's competitive edge.Communicate operational outcomes, equipment performance updates, and improvement proposals to both internal teams and external partners.Foster collaborative relationships with academic, industry, and government stakeholders involved in R&D and commercialization efforts.Directly supervise and mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing coaching, feedback, and development opportunities.Promote a collaborative, safe, and inclusive work environment that encourages innovation and continuous learning.The individual in this position will work as part of the company's R&D team and be actively involved in the development of new technologies to safely convert industrial CO2 emissions into solid bulk materials used in new low-carbon products for construction, industrial and consumer markets.The salary package will be discussed with the successful candidate based on experience.How to ApplyIf you are passionate about safety and looking for a challenging and rewarding role, we would love to hear from you.
