Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Primary Systems) UGL'S Utilities team designs, constructs and maintains critical infrastructure across the water and power sectors, including wastewater treatment plants and power stations. We design and construct assets such as power generation, transmission lines, substations, electrical distribution networks, water and wastewater treatment plants, and water pipelines.
UGL is currently looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Primary Systems) to become a key member of the Power Utilities team based in Sydney. You will be responsible for providing detailed designs, developing specifications, and interfacing with management on design issues.
About the Role Reporting to the Head of Engineering (Primary Systems), the Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Primary Systems) will be responsible for, but not limited to:
Providing conceptual and detailed design of HV Substations, Transmission Lines, BESS, solar, and wind farms. Planning and conducting professional engineering works. Attending site, supplier, or customer premises to ascertain or confirm project requirements. Key Areas of Substation Design: Substation Configuration and Busbar Config (Single, double, 1.5CB scheme, etc.) Plant layouts, sections, and details. Busbars and Connections (Fittings, Busbar Selection, S/C Forces, Gantry forces, Sags/Tension/Deflection, Arrangement). Clearances and Layouts (Safety, Fire, Transportation, and Maintenance). Underground Services (Trenches/Conduits/Cable routes capacity). Earthing design (Fundamentals, Soil/Grid Testing, Current Splits). Preparation of HV equipment/buildings specification and technical particulars. Knowledge of BESS, Solar, and Wind farms and their requirements. EMF and Corona study. Insulation Coordination (SA Selection / Insulation Selection). Knowledge of system planning, fault calculation, Power quality, and Harmonics. About You: 4-year degree qualification to Bachelor status in electrical engineering. At least 6 years of design experience in primary design of HV plants. Fundamental understanding of primary design. Detailed understanding of HV cable design, Earthing design, and lightning protection. Solid knowledge of insulation coordination, EMF, and lighting design. Professional level knowledge of Cymcap and CDEGS (MALZ/MALT/SESshield) design software. Knowledge of EMTP, CDEGS (FCDIST, RESAP, HIFREQ, SPLITS), PVsyst. Sound knowledge of HV and Solar farm equipment specification and ability to investigate requirements and develop specifications. Basic understanding of secondary design aspects of HV plants, solar, and wind farms. Solid understanding of the interface requirements of the civil/structural aspects of HV substations. Site experience during construction/commissioning of HV substations is an advantage. Ability to effectively communicate with CAD draughtspersons to optimise drawing output. Demonstrated ability to work independently, organise and prioritise demands, handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines, and follow through in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills (oral & written) including negotiation skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships. Proficient skills in computers: MS Word, Excel, Access, email.
