The Closing the Gap Branch is at the forefront of leading and influencing change across Government to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are heard, recognised and empowered. The Branch is responsible for the National Agreement on Closing the Gap architecture, governance, planning and strategic coordination.
The Branch plays a key role in supporting the NIAA and all parties to the National Agreement to embed the Priority Reforms, implement their Closing the Gap Strategies, and increase their capability to achieve their commitments under the National Agreement.
Assistant Directors and Senior Policy Officers in this Branch are leaders with strong strategic nous and the ability to quickly grasp and find solutions to complex issues. Across various roles in the Closing the Gap Branch, you would undertake work including, but not limited to:
Driving a strategic approach for the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and leading new policy development, including Cabinet and Budget processes, Secretaries Board, Policy Partnerships and Sector Strengthening Plans, and ongoing implementation of actions in response to the Productivity Commission's Review of the National Agreement.Managing stakeholder relationships under the Partnership Agreement and providing high-level secretariat functions for a number of committees relating to the National Agreement.Developing and delivering the Commonwealth's Closing the Gap Implementation Plan and Annual Reports under the National Agreement.Building and driving NIAA's influencing role across Government, particularly to embed the Priority Reforms and coordination of First Nations policy development across the Commonwealth.Vacancies exist at both Senior Policy Officer (APS6) and Assistant Director (EL1) levels within the following sections:

To be successful in the role you will need to be able to demonstrate the following:
APS Level 6An understanding of the issues affecting First Nations peoples and an ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner alongside, and for the benefit of, First Nations peoples, and the ability to manage competing priorities and tight timeframes to achieve quality results.Flexibility, resilience and a proven capacity to use initiative and sound judgement.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders.The capability to anticipate and respond to client and stakeholder needs and expectations.Executive Level 1An understanding of the issues affecting First Nations peoples, and an ability to model working in a culturally sensitive manner alongside, and for the benefit of, First Nations peoples.Strong leadership skills, and self-awareness, with a focus on supporting and fostering the development of junior staff abilities.A demonstrated ability to be strategic, resilient, innovative and form sound judgements on complex issues within tight timeframes.Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and ability to develop and nurture relationships with stakeholders.An ability to identify emerging opportunities or risks and respond quickly and proactively.To be eligible for this position, you must be an Australian Citizen. Occupants must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level. Successful candidates will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check.
NotesOngoing & Non-ongoing (for an initial period of up to 12 months). These roles are being advertised as both ongoing and non-ongoing, with the employment type to be determined in negotiation with the preferred candidate and the NIAA delegate. Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years. A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment, however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.

Getting to know the National Indigenous Australians AgencyThe National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) works directly to, and supports the Minister for Indigenous Australians, to implement whole-of-government policies and programs to improve the lives of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This includes liaising closely with State and Territory governments, Indigenous peak bodies, stakeholders, and service providers to ensure that Indigenous programs and services are delivering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as intended.
