The Role: The Medical Scientist performs a range of routine and specialised Pathology tests and associated quality assurance procedures. This includes being responsible for:
Performing diagnostic procedures to support the Department's statewide laboratory commitments as the tertiary referral centre for Endocrine disorders.Coordinating various associated quality improvement activities.Performing routine and specialised tests in the area of Pathology while maintaining adequate documentation of records of work performed.Interpreting laboratory results, ensuring all results and process verification procedures are complied with, and liaising with the requesting medical and nursing staff as appropriate.Participating in quality control and troubleshooting of testing and maintenance of quality assurance in accordance with policy, standards, regulations, and guidelines.The Team: The role is based within Pathology Services at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania's largest hospital. The Medical Scientist works within the Endocrinology Laboratory to provide specialised laboratory testing for patients attending Hospitals South facilities, and functions as a tertiary referral centre for specialised hormone markers used to manage endocrine conditions. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, our team works closely with clinicians and the University of Tasmania. The Endocrinology Laboratory has an integral working relationship with the clinical Department of Endocrinology at Hospitals South. Members of the team work closely together with a focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.
Details of appointment: Fixed term full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, from 1 January 2025 until 30 June 2025. *Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary: $106,966 to $118,114 per annum. Our Employer 11.5% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022.You'll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
Please note that access to salaries beyond $115,573 is subject to qualifications and/or application to the personal upgrade scheme.In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum.Benefits available to eligible candidates: Excellent leave benefits: 20 days annual leave, 20 days personal leave, and study assistance leave if eligible.Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $13.95 per week per person, or $25.95 for a family.Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.
Tertiary qualification/program of study in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Science or Applied Science or equivalent suitable to the position from a recognised institution.
Eligible for membership with a relevant professional body such as Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, The Australian Society for Microbiology, Human Genetics Society of Australasia, or the Australian Society of Cytology.
Where there is no relevant professional body, the essential qualification must be met.
Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee's responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.
