As the Senior Medical Officer at Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC), you will be crucial in providing high-quality health care and leadership within the Aboriginal community. GEGAC is committed to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities' health and well-being through a holistic approach that integrates cultural sensitivity, community engagement, and evidence-based practice.
The Senior Medical Officer will oversee General Practitioners, Registrars, and Dentists and be fully accountable for medical coverage and operational management. They will also lead clinical governance and engage in health research, outreach, promotion, and educational initiatives.
The Senior Medical Officer will oversee clinical governance, emphasising clinical safety, evidence-based practice, and client-centred care. This role encompasses clinical supervision of the Alcohol and Other Drug Programs, the Maternal Child Health Program, and Social and Emotional well-being initiatives, all within a framework that prioritises community-placed models of care. Through leadership, the Senior Medical Officer will ensure that these programs adhere to the highest standards of safety and efficacy while being deeply rooted in the needs and preferences of the community they serve.
Key Selection Criteria Extensive experience working as a medical practitioner in primary care settings, preferably focusing on Aboriginal or Indigenous health. Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in clinical supervision, mentoring, and team management. Demonstrate advanced skills in strategic and business planning processes, clinical governance and planning, decision making and meeting service targets. Strong understanding of the social determinants of health affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultural competence in providing healthcare. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including patients, families, colleagues and community members. Commitment to cultural safety, reconciliation, and promoting the rights and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Demonstrated leadership in developing, leading, and implementing clinical governance frameworks, ensuring regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, quality improvement, and measurable impact. Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable) Valid Driver's License ESSENTIAL Full Australian working rights ESSENTIAL Specialist or unconditional General Registration with AHPRA, as a Medical Practitioner with an MBBS/MBChB: Candidates must be either specialists or have complete registration as a general practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia—AHPRA, holding a degree in medicine (MBBS—Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or (MBChB—Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from an accredited institution ESSENTIAL Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or equivalent specialist qualification in general practice or rural medicine: Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), FSP Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), PEP for Practice Experience Program, and RVTS for Remote Vocational Training Scheme.
