POSITION VACANT: Senior Media Officer and WriterThis is an exciting opportunity for a driven and passionate environmentalist to join Australia's leading advocacy organisation tackling invasive species-led extinctions and destruction whilst working from home. We are looking for a values-aligned, talented senior media officer and writer with 5 years plus experience, to join a team making a big difference for native wildlife. This leading role will drive the communications of a dynamic national environmental organisation as we strive to save wildlife, stop extinctions and protect nature.Position: Senior Media Officer and WriterReports to: Director of Marketing and DevelopmentBasis: Full timeLocation: Work from home or a shared office. Applicants close to Canberra/Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Katoomba are preferred.Duration: 2 year contractSalary range: $90,000-$105,000 plus superAdded Benefits: In addition to 4 weeks annual leave, benefits include 1 week paid field work orstudy leave, 3 days leave between Christmas and New Years'; flexible workinghours and reduced FBT salary packaging.ContextThe Invasive Species Council is going through a period of growth as we build a movement to protect native species and our environment. The position is part of the marketing team that consists of 2 other communications staff that are responsible for the website and social media and 4 fundraising staff.This position leads all non-fundraising copywriting at the Invasive Species Council to support theorganisation and conservation teams and drives traditional media coverage.The position writes media releases, copy for website, emails and campaign materials. You will drive aconsistent drumbeat of storytelling through copy for all communications channels to a range ofaudiences including supporters, the public and key targeted audience. Your work will educate thepublic on the issues, engage our supporters in advocacy campaigns and build the reputation of theInvasive Species Council. You will ensure all communications across the organisation is of a highstandard, scientifically accurate and meeting brand and messaging guidelinesUltimately you will take our communications to new levels as we build a movement of Australians todefend against invasive species through strategic, audience-centric, compelling content.ResponsibilitiesKey responsibilities for this role are to:1. Write content for all communication channels and activities with a focus on our website,media releases, eDMs and campaign materials.2. Generate and promote compelling content for traditional media, including mediareleases to help ensure our leading campaigns are in the media spotlight.3. Build copywriting, content production and media capacity by coaching members of theInvasive Species Council team.4. Ensure brand guidelines are followed across all communications.5. Manage a resource library for photos, videos, spokes and stories.6. Measure and report on performance.You will work closely with the Marketing and Development Director and the Advocacy Director to deliver the media strategy and develop content.Media responsibilities? Develop and execute multi-channel traditional media strategy and procedures to putcampaign and project issues in the spotlight, build brand and issue awareness and sociallicence.? Support campaign and project teams to secure media for leading campaigns.? Manage day to day traditional media and lead pro-active media initiatives with supportfrom the marketing officer.? Build a network of allies in the media sector and other collaborators (mediaspokespersons and ambassadors).? Inspire and lead the ISC Team to develop media skills, build relevant relationships andbuild story content by providing support, direction, coaching and feedback.? Prepare insightful analysis, recommendations, and performance reports.Content (copywriting) responsibilities? Assist in the development of strategic communications, in particular advocacy writing.? Draft and develop written content materials for digital and print in accordance withbranding and messaging guidelines.? Write content for traditional media across all programs, including media releases, rapidresponse communications and media packages for leading campaigns or hot issues.? Supervise copywriting by the team and help to manage content approvals withMarketing and Development Director.? Build the capacity of the organisation to develop effective content and impactfulcopywriting consistent with the brand guidelines by mentoring key members of staff.? Develop and manage a resource library that supports all communicationsimplementation (photos, video, spokes, stories) with support from other members of themarketing team.Other responsibilities? Drive the application of the brand guidelines across the organisation.? Proactively contribute to the culture at ISC: a positive, fun, and value-driven culturewithin the team and ISC? Adhere to ISC policies and procedures? Attend staff meetings and training as required including a twice-yearly face to face? Other duties as determined by the Director of Marketing and Development from time to
time.Performance measures? Delivery of the media strategy? Successful delivery of day to day responsive and proactive media? The CEO, conservation and marketing team copy and media needs are well supported? Timely and accurate delivery of programs and tasks? Public communications adhere to brand guidelines2? Resource library is well organised and accessible? Team copywriting skills and capacity building needs are well supported.Selection criteria? Bachelor's degree in journalism, strategic communications, marketing or equivalent.? At least five years professional experience working in a communications role, preferablyin an environmental NGO.? Expertise in messaging, short and long form copywriting, brand voice and organisationalstyle.? Expertise in writing for and managing traditional media, building strong relationshipswith journalists and media outlets .? Expertise in delivering integrated communications campaigns across a variety ofmediums and channels, including media releases, website, eDMs, publications.? Sound writing skills that enable you to produce story-driven pieces about complexenvironmental and/or political issues.? Demonstrated ability to interpret and deliver a brief under pressure and quickly sourcesuitable footage and photos and develop key messaging.? Experienced at helping to build the capacity of team members to develop effectivecontent, impactful copywriting and editing by mentoring key members of staff.? Demonstrated experience in implementing brand guidelines across a team.? Ability to thrive in a fast paced, time pressured environment, working to deadlines indiverse, dispersed teams and manage schedules to develop and deliver shared projects.? Detailed understanding of environment, agricultural and/or biosecurity issues? Experience working for an advocacy organisation, political office or media organisationor as a science communicator.? Extensive experience executing campaigns/lead generation across 'cost per click'platforms, landing page optimisation and A/B split testing campaigns to increaseconversion.? Familiarity with scientific research and its application to real-world outcomes.Location : Work from home or a shared office.
