Senior Tax Manager – Indirect Tax – Financial Services Smart Tax Search is partnering with one of the largest financial services players within superannuation, insurance, and life insurance in Australia. Due to an internal restructure, they have a brand new position available for an experienced Indirect Tax professional, reporting to the Head of Tax.
Working as part of a sizable, established Group Tax Team, your key accountabilities will be as follows:
Ensuring: All indirect tax matters relating to the TDA Tax group are dealt with in accordance with the law and are accurately recorded and reported.Indirect tax impacts upon customers and policyholders are accurate and correct.Implications of new tax laws and other compliance requirements are understood, planned for, and implemented, and business leaders are aware of their obligations in relation to these.The business is well represented in relevant external bodies and with associated regulatory and other compliance bodies. Business (revenue) related tax accountabilities: Manage indirect tax risk end to end throughout the Business in accordance with the Risk Governance Framework.Be responsible for and accountable for setting requirements for the business to execute that are designed to ensure compliance against tax law.Ensure the Group has robust systems, processes, and controls in place to meet all regulatory and customer indirect tax compliance obligations.Advise and partner with Business Unit leaders on matters such as:Goods & Services Tax,Stamp Duty,Fringe Benefits Tax, andAdvisory support in relation to various Payroll initiatives including but not limited to State Tax changes and global mobility proposals.New product set up and ensuring efficient and compliance tax outcomes are considered.Drive indirect tax outcomes, particularly in relation to duty, when it comes to new products strategic developments. You will be seen as a key stakeholder that is capable of having discussions and leading implementation efforts in this regard. You will be able to work autonomously and escalate where required. Active engagement with key Regulators to ensure the business is compliant and is operating within its Tax Risk Governance Framework. You will be able to drive audit engagements and feel confident to hold such discussions independently. Explain the tax position to internal and external stakeholders, at all levels, and show a clear means of substantiating the position. Your advice will be able to be easily understood and implemented. Manage internal and external audit reviews where applicable. Provide accurate, complete, and timely tax advice and services on a range of topics in support of commercial decisions. Implement new systems and processes and manage the integration of a new tax function for newly acquired businesses as required.
Corporate related tax accountabilities: Manage indirect tax risk end to end throughout the Business in accordance with the Risk Governance Framework.Provide expert advice on matters related to indirect tax (incl., GST, FBT, Stamp Duty).Ensure the accurate provision of a range of compliance deliverables for the Group.Ensure the Group has robust systems, processes, and controls in place to meet all regulatory and customer tax compliance obligations.Ensure that current tax models and calculators are fit for purpose.Management of relevant returns, compliance, and reporting requirements ensuring the engagement of internal and external stakeholders (including GST, FBT, Payroll Tax support, Stamp Duty, and others where required).Manage the external auditors in relation to their tax reviews. Attributes, knowledge & experience of the successful candidate: Knowledge and practical experience in applying Australia's Indirect Tax laws for a financial services business. Knowledge and experience of life insurance, funds management, custody, or superannuation would be ideal (but not a prerequisite).6-15 years' experience in an Australian indirect tax role including GST and Stamp Duty (or insurance duty).Understanding of ATO requirements and expectations.Understanding of various State Revenue Authorities requirements and expectations.Demonstrated ability, and a strong desire, to work with management in working through commercial issues.Experience and skill in providing clear, confident, supported tax advice (verbal and written) to all types of stakeholders and in providing clear, practical instructions where required.Demonstrated ability to clearly explain the tax position and tax results to management.Ability to translate tax law requirements accurately into practical requirements for systems and processes.Ability and desire to learn new areas of tax law, commercial arrangement, systems and process development, Mergers and Acquisitions, operating in a conglomerate.Confidence in working with accounting information and data.A hands-on approach to assignments and getting things done.Qualifications in tax / tax law. This role can be based in any major city in Australia. It also offers a clear progression/succession plan for the Head of Tax role.
