Please contact the contact officer for further details.Senior Legal Officer - Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide - Implementation TaskforceCanberra ACTThe key duties of the position include:The RoleThe Senior Legal Officer will support the Deputy General Counsel-RCDVS Implementation Taskforce in strategic and specialist practice areas including: constitutional law; administrative law; employment law; public interest disclosure; health law; information and privacy law; work health and safety; regulatory compliance; statutory interpretation and general advising matters.As an EL 1 Senior Legal Officer within the Taskforce, you will exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role within the in-house practice. You will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies and priorities along with participation in strategic objectives regarding the Government response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide Final Report.In addition to utilising your strong technical legal skills, you will develop a keen understanding of the workings of Government and a comprehensive ability to manage multiple stakeholders. You will use your excellent technical legal skills to work across a broad range of matters (including drafting and review of varying subject matter and complexity).You will provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as lead and assume accountability for complex work, sensitive projects or work programs that may have strategic or political significance. You will use your excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills to initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally.Please note: This vacancy is a broadband classification APS Level 3 - Executive Level 1 (Legal 1). The Executive Level 1 (Legal 1) position salary range is $115,899 to $141,923.About our TeamThis is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment supporting the RCDVS Implementation Taskforce (the Taskforce), which has been established to lead Defence's response to the Royal Commission's Final Report submitted in September 2024. The Taskforce is responsible for providing governance, oversight and support for the implementation of Government agreed recommendations.The EL1 Senior Legal Officer performs a key function within the General Counsel Team and will support the RCDVS Implementation Program. The Taskforce General Counsel Team provides strategic legal advice and representation as well as legal support including reviewing and clearing draft Defence submissions to government and liaising with Defence Legal regarding legislative amendments that may be required. We offer a range of learning and development opportunities, as well as a study assistance program.Our Ideal CandidateAs an EL 1 Senior Legal Officer, you will:Have excellent technical legal skills, having worked across a broad range of matters.Strong people management skills and will work well in a high performing and cohesive team and have the ability to assist in the planning and management of the team's workflow and performance.Use this technical skill to provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work, sensitive projects or work programs that have strategic, political, or operational significance.Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills, including the ability to initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally.Security ClearanceApplicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance of 'Baseline'.Mandatory QualificationsHold a relevant degree in law (or equivalent qualification);Hold a graduate diploma in legal practice (or equivalent);Be admitted as a lawyer, legal practitioner, barrister, solicitor or barrister and solicitor of the High Court or Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory; andBe eligible to hold and maintain a practising certificate in the jurisdiction in which they practice.Getting to know the Department of DefenceThe Department of Defence employs around 18,000 Australian Public Service (APS) employees.
