Over the past 32 years, Cape York Land Council (CYLC) has successfully pursued the recognition of Aboriginal land rights and native title and led innovative reform on the Cape. The Senior Legal Officer is responsible for coordinating legal work on native title claims and plays a key role in progressing matters by building and maintaining strong relationships with multiple native title parties.
Key qualifications and experience required:Eligibility to hold a practising certificate in Queensland.At least 6 years PAE – native title, cultural heritage law or mining and exploration experience highly desirable.Effective writing and oral communication skills, including adapting communication techniques to different audiences.Familiarity with the Native Title Act 1993 and/or other relevant legislation (such as The Mineral Resources Act 1989).An understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political issues that affect the Indigenous people of Cape York.Applications for this position close COB, 4th October 2024.
