An opportunity has arisen to join the team at Cubico Sustainable Investments as Senior Legal Associate – Australia.
We are seeking a mid-senior level lawyer who has strong experience with land contracts in the Australian renewables space.
The Senior Legal Associate position is a wide-ranging role that will require the candidate to deliver legal advice and support across the full range of development, construction, and operational matters relating to Cubico's Australian business.
You will work closely with the local development and construction teams with the expectation to work autonomously.
This position will work from our Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane offices on a hybrid basis.
Key Responsibilities:Managing and providing accurate and effective advice on a wide range of development, property, and planning matters.Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating all types of land agreements (including Exclusivity and Licence Agreements, Agreements for Lease, Leases, Options for Easement, Easements, Caveats, Mortgagee Consent Deeds, Options to Purchase, Contracts for Sale, Cultural Heritage Management Plans) and providing advice internally on the same.Working flexibly, reviewing, and contributing on other corporate, M&A, joint venture, construction, and project finance matters relating to Cubico's Australian investments.Managing disputes with landowners and other relevant stakeholders relating to the development, construction, and operation of Cubico's Australian assets.Liaising with the Australian legal team in the context of transactions and day-to-day operational matters.Ensuring compliance with existing arrangements in respect of Cubico's existing portfolio of assets, liaising with lenders and joint venture partners and their legal advisers, and preparing and reviewing relevant consents, notifications, and other similar documentation as necessary and relevant to the role.Commissioning external legal advice where appropriate (e.g., specialist advice) on areas of law and transactions.Supporting the development of in-house expertise, both within the Development and Legal team and across business divisions, and developing internal policies, procedures, and precedents.Delivering advice in a clear and concise manner in a fast-paced environment to a variety of business teams and seniority levels.Advising on new law/regulation/policy changes and how the business/documentation can best take account of this.Identifying and reporting any matters of a legal nature which should be drawn to the Senior Legal Counsel's or other Legal team members' attention.Key StakeholdersAustralian legal teamAustralian development teamAustralia Country Head and Project DirectorConstruction and operations teamsMaintaining and developing positive relationships with colleagues throughout the Australian business and within Legal, HR & Corporate Affairs, as well as in other functional departments such as Investment Analysis & Strategy, Finance & Tax.The successful candidate will have/be:Excellent and in-depth land law experience in the renewables space (gained either in private practice or in-house, with at least some private practice experience) is essential.Some project finance, construction, and/or company law/M&A experience would be advantageous.Solicitor/lawyer qualified in Australia.Extensive and relevant post-qualification experience.Proactive and pragmatic with a positive attitude and can-do approach.Enthusiastic and able to take ownership of problems and provide commercial solutions.Self-starter who identifies when to clarify tasks and requirements, has the ability to manage a full and varied workload, and can prioritize and work under tight timescales.Develops constructive professional relationships.Experience of instructing and managing external counsel preferred.Ability to persuade and influence internal client base in the provision of advice and manage internal client base's expectations.Ability to identify and manage legal risk (even if little prior experience in the relevant area).Strong attention to detail and accuracy with good analytical skills.Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.Articulate and excellent communication skills both written and verbal.Highly reliable, collegiate, and personable.Ability to continually review and reassess priorities in response to changing situations and deadlines at relatively short notice.Confident and equally able to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.About Cubico Sustainable InvestmentsEstablished in 2015, Cubico Sustainable Investments (Cubico), a London-headquartered firm, is one of the world's leaders in providing renewable energy across the Americas, Europe, and Australia.
