As a Senior Lawyer - Policy, you will work closely with the Director and Assistant Directors to advance Legal Aid Queensland's view on law reform proposals, advocating with government departments on issues affecting clients and liaising with key stakeholders and justice system agencies.
You will also represent legally aided clients in family law and related matters while providing leadership, management and guidance.
You will also have the opportunity to identify ways to improve processes and procedures to ensure we are delivering a high-quality service that exceeds the expectations of our clients and stakeholders.
The successful candidate will play an integral role in the following:
Coordinate and support the Family Law Services directorate to lead Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives as required.
Oversee and coordinate the development of family law services policy proposals and responses to legislative reforms including writing, collating and proofing submissions.
Provide advice on and contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems (including undertaking any research as necessary) and undertake operational reporting requirements, as required.
Support the Director – Practice Management in performing the role of conflict compliance officer in accordance with the conflict-of-interest policy.
Support the Executive Director, Directors and Principal Lawyers in conducting quality audits and file reviews on the files of legal practitioners in accordance with the risk-based file review strategy and assist to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills of staff within Family Law Services, as required.
You will have:
You have experience in the conduct of complex family law matters and related matters, advocacy, preparation for and attendance at final hearings.
You have an understanding of and can apply the principles of trauma informed practice to effectively deal with clients with complex needs in stressful situations.
You present in a clear, concise and articulate manner in both oral and written formats and communicate effectively with clients with complex needs, internal and external stakeholders.
You are committed to the development of self and others, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the law and procedure including, ethics, confidentiality, conflict of interest and information barriers.
You provide clear guidance and constructive feedback to others to build capability of the team.
You have experience in drafting public policy and preparing submissions.
You are able to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines, are self-motivated and can demonstrate resilience in an environment where there are competing priorities.
